Teaching Hypsography Through Virtual Reality
Collaborative Immersive Virtual Environments in Geography Education on Climate Zones
This study examines students’ experiences with Biomes, a Collaborative Immersive Virtual Environment (CIVE) designed to teach climate zones through virtual reality. The research employed a combination of Research through Design (RtD) methodology and Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) to explore how students view their CIVE experience and its perceived impact on learning. 16 students (aged 12–15) participated in structured lessons usin…

Metrics for the identification of primary centers of government from historical itineraries
This paper enhances the study of medieval kingdom governance through digital analytical methods, drawing on approaches developed by German historians in the 1980s and 1990s. We focused the research on Přemysl Otakar II’s reign (1251-1278), using a dataset of his activities, geocoded localities, and reconstructed travel routes with estimated times. We identified the primary centers of governance by applying twelve metrics from statistical, geostat…
A comparison of performance using extrinsic and intrinsic bivariate cartographic visualizations with respect to cognitive style in experienced map users
When spatial information is depicted on univariate or multivariate maps, different visualization designs should be considered to fit the designs to suit the target audience and define the map's general purpose and therefore also the map user's expected cognitive processes. Although multivariate maps have attracted research for decades, only several studies have compared the effectiveness of maps that use extrinsic and intrinsic encoding styles, a…
Geography Education in a Collaborative Virtual Environment
The presented study aspires to utilize the gradually validated immense potential of collaborative immersive virtual environments (CIVEs) in higher education when designing and conducting geography lessons. These particular lessons focused on hypsography. A Research through Design approach and relevant qualitative methodology were used as we engaged two groups of domain experts (experienced geography teachers) to validate both the learning scenari…
Technologies and the representations of activity spaces of older adults
Technology, in its various forms, mediates encounters between individuals and the lived time–space. Mobile phones, internet, navigation systems, and advanced transport technologies dramatically change the ways in which space and time are conceptualized, represented, and embedded into societal practices. This paper explores the routine spatiotemporal practices of older adults, who lie outside mainstream technology use. Attention is paid to the rol…
Cross-cultural differences in figure–ground perception of cartographic stimuli
This article reports on an empirical study investigating cultural differences in the visuospatial perception and cognition of qualitative point symbols shown on reference maps. We developed two informationally equivalent symbol sets depicted on identical reference maps that were shown to Czech and Chinese map readers. The symbols varied in visual contrast with respect to the base map. Our empirical results suggest the existence of cultural influe…
