  • Parental modelling has a sustainable effect on offspring’s physical activity

    Open Access•Bettina Bringolf-Isler, Bettina Bringolf‐Isler et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2025

Parental role modelling influences children's PA behavior in a sustainable and sex-specific manner from childhood to young adulthood. PA interventions for parents have the potential for transgenerational benefits

  • Where sports performance meets reproductive rights

    Open Access•Bengt Kayser•ARTICLE•Drugs Education Prevention and…•2024

Rational To discuss the use of hormonal contraception (HC) in elite women’s competitive sports from an anti-doping perspective because 1) it changes the natural female hormonal milieu; 2) is used to manipulate the menstrual cycle with performance enhancement intent; 3) even though lowering endogenous testosterone levels, some HCs contain testosterone-like androgenic compounds with potential performance-enhancing effects. Results A complex interact…

  • Does growing up in a physical activity-friendly neighborhood increase the likelihood of remaining active during adolescence and early adulthood

    Open Access•Bettina Bringolf-Isler, Bettina Bringolf‐Isler et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2024

The results suggest that growing up in a physical activity friendly neighborhood increases the likelihood of remaining active during adolescence and early adulthood. Interventions should be implemented to ensure that children growing up in an unfavorable neighborhood do not fall behind at an early stage

  • Exceptional Performance in Competitive Ski Mountaineering

Open Access•Bengt Kayser, Benoît Mariani•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Sports and Active…•2022

Organized biannually in the Swiss Alps since 1984, the "Patrouille des Glaciers" (PDG) is one of the most challenging long-distance ski mountaineering (skimo) team competitions in the world. The race begins in Zermatt (1,616 m) and ends in Verbier (1,520 m), covering a total distance of 53 km with a cumulated 4,386 m of ascent and 4,482 m of descent. About 4,800 athletes take part in this competition, in teams of three. We hereby present the perf…

  • Key Nutritional Considerations for Youth Winter Sports Athletes to Optimize Growth, Maturation and Sporting Development

Open Access•Marcus P Hannon, Joëlle Leonie Flueck et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Sports and Active…•2021

Despite a wealth of sport nutrition guidelines for adult athletes, there are currently no nutrition guidelines for youth winter sports athletes. Whilst it may be pragmatic to apply nutrition guidelines for adult athletes to youth winter sports athletes, it is inappropriate. Due to a paucity of research on youth athletes, it is impossible to provide evidence-based guidelines for this population, so careful extrapolation from the theoretical and pr…

  • Acute Effects of the Wim Hof Breathing Method on Repeated Sprint Ability

Open Access•Tom Citherlet, Fabienne Crettaz Von Roten et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Sports and Active…•2021

The Wim Hof breathing method (WHBM) combines periods of hyperventilation (HV) followed by voluntary breath-holds (BH) at low lung volume. It has been increasingly adopted by coaches and their athletes to improve performance, but there was no published research on its effects. We determined the feasibility of implementing a single WHBM session before repeated sprinting performance and evaluated any acute ergogenic effects. Fifteen amateur runners …

  • The Influence of Training Load on Hematological Athlete Biological Passport Variables in Elite Cyclists

Open Access•Tiffany Astolfi, Fabienne Crettaz Von Roten et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Sports and Active…•2021

The hematological module of the Athlete Biological Passport (ABP) is used in elite sport for antidoping purposes. Its aim is to better target athletes for testing and to indirectly detect blood doping. The ABP allows to monitor hematological variations in athletes using selected primary blood biomarkers [hemoglobin concentration (Hb) and reticulocyte percentage (Ret%)] with an adaptive Bayesian model to set individual upper and lower limits. If v…

  • Lack of Pregraduate Teaching on the Associations between the Built Environment, Physical Activity and Health in Swiss Architecture and Urban Design Degree Programs

    Open Access•Matthias Zedi, Bengt Kayser•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2020

There is a need to introduce formal learning objectives in architecture, landscape architecture, and urban design DPs in Switzerland on the associations between BE, PA and health. It is likely that similar needs exist in other countries

  • Sedentary Behaviour in Swiss Children and Adolescents

Open Access•Bettina Bringolf‐Isler, Kees de Hoogh et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2018

Identifying correlates of sedentary behaviour across all levels of the ecological model and understanding their interrelations is a promising method to plan effective interventions. The present study examined whether the objectively assessed and the perceived neighbourhood are associated with children’s sedentary behaviour time (SBT). A comprehensive set of factors at different levels of influence across the ecological model were taken into accou…

  • Objectively measured physical activity in population-representative parent-child pairs

    Open Access•Bettina Bringolf-Isler, Bettina Bringolf‐Isler et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2018

Parental modelling seems relevant for children's PA, but not to the same degree in all children. Interventions focusing on strengthening parental PA behaviour for the promotion of PA in the young must consider additional contextual factors related to the socio-cultural and structural environment

  • Range of motion and energy cost of locomotion of the late medieval armoured fighter

Daniel Jaquet, Alice Bonnefoy Mazure et al.•ARTICLE•Historical Methods A Journal of…•2016•References: 19

Study of technical, normative, and narrative medieval literature and of archaeological pieces allows the motor skills of armoured members of the aristocracy to be outlined but not quantified. The authors present novel data on the impact of wearing armour on both the freedom of movement and the energy cost of locomotion, and confront the results to systematic analysis of medieval written sources. An accurate harness replica realized in an informed…
