Adapters, Strugglers, and Case Managers
Although family home care problems are frequently described in the health care literature, the ways in which families and other informal caregivers manage those problems are not often addressed. We conducted a descriptive analysis of interviews in which spouses caring for a partner with Alzheimer's or Parkinson's disease were asked to describe difficult home care problems and how they managed those problems. Analysis of these interviews indicated…
Physical Activity, Weight, and Waist Circumference in Midlife Women
During midlife years, women are at risk of increasing body weight and waist circumference. We evaluated changes in weight and waist circumference from enrollment to 2 years later and examined the influence of physical activity level on those changes among 232 women aged between 40 and 50. Weight increased significantly for the entire sample. Those who increased their physical activity from enrollment to 2 years later had the smallest increase in …
Body Mass Index in Multiethnic Midlife Women
We examined the influence of demographic characteristics and physical activity on body mass index (BMI) in multiethnic midlife women. A sample of 236 African, European, and Mexican/Central Americans aged 40-50 completed the initial, 1-year, and 2-year assessments. The effects of demographic characteristics and physical activity on BMI at the 2-year assessment were evaluated using hierarchical multiple regression analysis. After controlling for ot…
Remembering Florence Schorske Wald, Friend and Mentor
The world knows Florence S. Wald as “the mother of the American hospice movement.” I knew her in her later life as a mentor and friend. This may not seem unusual, as Florence was a warm and generous human being who continued her professional involvements late into her life. In fact, the unusual aspect of our relationship resulted from two of Florence's many extraordinary qualities: 1) her willingness to share her own life experience in ways that …
Disease Management Status
The number of indicators of chronic disease management is large and no practical framework is available to guide selection for use in intervention programs. In addition, it is often difficult to integrate multiple disease management indicators into a comprehensive picture of patient functioning. The authors present a heuristic framework for creating a profile of disease management and an empirically based descriptive typology of disease managemen…
Measuring Parental Grief After Childhood Cancer
To contribute to a better understanding of the utility of the Symptom Checklist-90-Revised (SCL-90R; L. Derogatis, 1983) with bereaved samples, an exploratory factor analysis was conducted on SCL-90R responses of 97 parents 2 years after the death of their child from cancer. The factor analysis revealed one significant factor that accounted for 30% of the variance in this administration. This factor included many items that reflected the theme of…
