  • Documents hidden behind a wall: An episode in the long-term archival conflict between the Este and the Roman Apostolic Chamber, 1633

    Open Access•Alessandro Guidi, Andrea Guidi•ARTICLE•Historical Research•2025

This article examines the correspondence between Duke Francesco I d'Este (1629-58) and his agents regarding the documents the papal authorities found in 1633 behind a wall of Ferrara's castle, following the devolution of the city to the Papal States (1598). This article argues that this correspondence discloses the mentality behind the uses and the notions of archives that guided the protagonists of this story - that is, expectations that reveal …

Open Access•Andrea Guidi, Judith ömmer et al.•BOOK•Between vita activa and vita…•2024

Letters went viral in early modern Italy, with politics and social interaction, artistic inspiration as well as spirituality and philosophy all hinging on ingenious epistolary cultures. Correspondence fashioned intellectuals and networks, constructed thoughts and schemes, provided a stage for politics and the arts, reflected on existential questions and professional activities. It involved not only writing, but diplomacy, praying, painting, compo…

  • Una possibile fonte delle Istorie fiorentine

    Open Access•Alessandro Guidi, Andrea Guidi•ARTICLE•Laboratoire italien•2021

  • Twenty Years After “Absolute Chronology: Archaeological Europe 2500-500 BC”

    Open Access•Alessandro Guidi•ARTICLE•Acta Archaeologica•2018•Cited by: 1•References: 5

The article is a tribute to the pioneering role of Klavs Randsborg in the early Nineties in search for a new comprehensive chronology for Italian and European prehistory based on a combination of dendrodates with C14 dates. The debate of the last 25 years on this matter is presented, demonstrating a scholarly split, in particular in Italy. At the same time, an Italian peculiarity, the presence of layers of volcanic eruptions mixed with archaeolog…

  • The Emergence of Stratigraphic Archaeology in Mediterranean Europe: The Italian Case-Study (1900-1950)

    Open Access•Alessandro Guidi, Massimo Tarantini•ARTICLE•Acta Archaeologica•2017•References: 1

In Italian classical archaeology, the definitive adoption of the stratigraphic excavation method occurred later than in other European countries. This methodological shift took place in Italy in the 1970s. We aim to scrutinize some points of the established historiographical reconstruction. We focus on three scholars regarded as “key figures” in the birth of Italian stratigraphic archaeology, yet all of the first half of the twentieth century, Gi…

  • Per peli e per segni’. Muster rolls, lists and notes: Practical military records relating to the last Florentine ordinanze and militia, from Machiavelli to the fall of the Republic (1506-30)

    Open Access•Alessandro Guidi, Andrea Guidi•ARTICLE•Historical Research•2016•Cited by: 1•References: 4

In Renaissance Florence, the militia force created by Machiavelli in 1506, then re-established in 1527–30, involved the production of two types of records: the low-level ‘practical’ records which documented the daily running of an army in the field, such as muster rolls, notes and lists; and the upper-level administrative records, such as the correspondence between governing bodies and military officers. An analysis of published and unpublished s…

  • The Florentine Archives in Transition: Government, Warfare and Communication (1289–1530 ca.)

    Open Access•Alessandro Guidi, Andrea Guidi•ARTICLE•European History Quarterly•2016

A turning point in European administrative and documentary practices was traditionally associated, most famously by Robert-Henri Bautier, with the monarchies of the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries. By summarizing previous research in this field, as well as by using both published and unpublished sources, this article intends to underline an earlier process of transition connected to the development of significant new techniques for…

  • Archival Transformations in Early Modern European History

Open Access•Filippo De Vivo, Alessandro Guidi et al.•ARTICLE•European History Quarterly•2016•Cited by: 14•References: 1

This special issue addresses a double transformation. The first is the historical process that saw a dramatic increase in the production of documents and a substantial improvement in their management and preservation throughout Europe between the fifteenth and the eighteenth centuries. The early modern period, broadly conceived, is often described as the age of print, but it was also the great time of archives, understood as both the physical rep…

  • Clarke in Mediterranean archaeology

    Open Access•Alessandro Guidi•ARTICLE•Antiquity•1998•Cited by: 1

When ANTIQUITY published the historical article by Clarke, I was a 20-year-old student, deeply engaged in field activities and substantially torn away from the 'theoretical' debate. My archaeological loss of innocence happened only in the early 1980s, when I discovered (thanks to people like Maurizio Tosi and Anna Maria Bietti Sestieri) the enormous explanatory potential of processual theories. It would be absurd to label the whole of Italian archa…
