Ethnographic Perspectives on Female Peacemaking in Customary Contexts in Central Eurasia
This article is interested in how, why and to what extent women contribute to peacemaking in customary contexts in Central Eurasia. Using the concept and methodology of Ethnographic Peace Research (EPR), an interdisciplinary and inter-regional team conducted iterative ethnographic and pilot participatory explorations in fives villages in Georgia’s Dusheti region, in an urban Uzbek community in Osh, among women traders in Osh bazaars, and in Kyrgy…
Ethnographic Studies of Everyday Situated Peace between Kyrgyz and Uzbeks in Osh Bazaars and Workplaces
Since the violent 1990 and 2010 clashes between Kyrgyz and Uzbeks in Osh, peace-oriented scholarship has been preoccupied with conflict analysis, the prevention of interethnic divides and the critique of international peacebuilding. Following the post-liberal concept of Ethnographic Peace Research, this article goes beyond these approaches through ethnographic exploration and an understanding of situated micro-level peacemaking from below. Drawin…

Violence and Security in Central Asia
When “branding” meets “building
Despite the growing attention to the everyday, nation-building literature has paid insufficient attention to the ways in which national identity is strengthened as a side effect of measures that are not initially conceived of as nation-building activities. This article examines contemporary examples of such non-traditional processes of nation-building by reviewing the unintended consequences of political measures not directly targeting identity c…
The Declining Role of Political Elites in Revolutions in Post-communist Eurasia
In October 2020 the world witnessed the third sudden change of power in Kyrgyzstan since its independence. In 2005, 2010 and 2020 repeated mass protests led to the violent fall of the political regimes of Akaev, Bakiev and Zheenbekov. Although these events were more or less similar in terms of the conditions contributing to the protests, they were different in the way the political elites were viewed by the protesters. The aim of this contributio…

The legitimation of Askar Akaev through cultural performance in Kyrgyzstan (1991–2005)
In contrast to existing nationalism studies on Central Asia, I argue that state‐sponsored celebrations in Kyrgyzstan were multi‐functional and were used to maintain political legitimation based on the politics of Kyrgyz mega‐celebrations held during the presidency of Askar Akaev (1991–2005). I propose that in weak democracies like Kyrgyzstan, with widespread electoral malpractice, political legitimacy is shaky and that therefore the political lea…
Cheating the Machine
This paper analyses the e-voting experience of the local elections undertaken by Osh city Council in 2016. The process was introduced to ensure fair and democratic elections in Kyrgyzstan after continuous and repeated violent political uprising. The e-system, based on biometrics registration, biometric identification of voters and automated vote counting, was designed to help to avoid the most common election frauds: vote buying, carousel voting …
