Emotion Inferences During Reading Comprehension
This paper provides an explanation for the nonspecificity of emotion inferences found in previous research [e.g., Language and Cognitive Processes, 19(5), 613–638, 2004]. We first demonstrate that behavioral components of emotions, as opposed to emotions per se, are better markers of readers' mental representations of the main character's affective status. We also suggest that in a self-paced reading paradigm, when participants read sentences slo…
The Mental Representation of Narrative Texts as Networks
The purpose of this study is to determine how the perceived strength of 4 types of causal relations (physical causality, motivation, psychological causation, and enablement) is affected by causal properties (i.e., necessity and sufficiency) and by distance in the text surface structure. Participants evaluated the strength of the relations between pairs of sentences extracted from narratives either without reading the narratives, or with one or tw…
Updating Spatial Situation Models
The updating process is crucial to the development of a situation model. The process may be either an online or a delayed process. These 2 opposite assumptions led us to investigate the time course and quality of the updating process. We assumed that the updating process is sensitive to readers' prior knowledge and to the task that participants have to perform. We compared the data obtained with 2 tasks that both assessed the integration of the s…
