An experimental comparison of global and local accommodation
Presupposition triggers have been noted to vary in how easily they can be globally or locally accommodated. A look at previous classifications with respect to these two properties (e.g. Kripke 2009 for global accommodation, Abusch 2010 for local accommodation) shows that there is substantial overlap between triggers with respect to both types of accommodation difficulty (e.g. too is difficult both globally and locally, whereas stop is easy for bo…
How the position of at least affects its interpretation
The Focus-particle at least is known to be ambiguous between two interpretations: an epistemic one conveying uncertainty/ignorance, and a concessive/evaluative one that conveys a desirability ranking. Prior literature has argued that the position of at least determines what interpretation is available: at least is concessive/evaluative adsententially and epistemic adnominally. We present three experiments that investigate how three properties whi…
On the Role of Focus-Sensitivity for a Typology of Presupposition Triggers
This paper presents two experiments comparing presupposition triggers that differ with respect to Focus-sensitivity. The hypothesis was that Focus-sensitive (+focus) triggers require a linguistic antecedent in the discourse model, whereas presuppositions of triggers lacking Focus-sensitivity (–focus) are satisfied as entailments of the Common Ground. Each experiment tested a distinct prediction of this hypothesis, namely (i) being subject to sali…
Tense and Discourse Structure
Recent studies of appositives have turned up differences between sentence-medial appositives and sentence-final appositives, for instance, in their availability for discourse continuations. Three experiments investigated whether medial appositives are more difficult to comprehend than final appositives and if so why. Experiment 1 tested coordinating (Narration) versus subordinating (Elaboration) discourse relations in sentence-medial or sentence-…
