From layout to practice: Testing instruction comics during the European Researchers’ Night
Comics have been recognised for their potential to effectively communicate procedural knowledge, particularly in health contexts. While previous research has analysed the formal design features of several types of comics, including the genre of instruction comics, empirical evidence on how readers process and reconstruct their multimodal content remains limited. This study addresses this gap by examining readers’ ability to understand and reassem…
A recipe for success: The design, use, and effectiveness of multimodal online baking instructions
This paper presents three studies on the design, use and effectiveness of multimodal online baking blogs that present cookie recipes in two forms: illustrated step-by-step Instructions with Pictures and printable text-only Recipe Cards. Firstly, a corpus study describes how authors combine text and pictures in 15 blogs. Secondly, an eye-tracking study was conducted to explore how 12 participants read and evaluate baking blogs and the Instructions…
The Representation of Help Givers in First Aid Instruction Materials: A Multimodal Reception Study
This study explores how far a variety of choices in the visualization of help givers in first aid instruction materials can be associated the perception of these help givers in viewers. We present a reception study, in which we analyze 40 images from a first aid corpus by focusing on variations in their image type, perspective, camera angle, shot size, color, facial expression visibility, and gender. A total of 107 participants evaluated these im…
No laughing matter!? Analyzing the Page Layout of Instruction Comics
The study reported in this paper analyzes the specific genre of ‘instruction comics’ with regard to typical patterns of comic book pages. As a sequential-pictorial genre with a narrative as well as instructive character, ‘instruction comics’ have recently and increasingly been used in education as a novel way to communicate, for instance, health-related information. The corpus for this study includes 37 single-page first-aid comics that all show …
The clarity and correctness of visualized thrust actions: A description and insights from users and experts
This article presents three studies that evaluate the effectiveness of instructional pictures that visualize Heimlich maneuver thrusts. Firstly, a corpus study is used to describe a collection of 30 pictures employing a model in which the angle, perspective, body and hand positions of the first-aid helper and the victim, the thrust action and its depicted results are analysed. Results show a large variation in the visualizations of the same actio…
Generating Multimodal References
This paper presents a new computational model for the generation of multimodal referring expressions, based on observations in human communication. The algorithm is an extension of the graph-based algorithm proposed by The Flashlight Model accounts for various types of pointing gestures of different precisions. Based on a notion of effort the algorithm produces referring expressions combining language and pointing gestures. The algorithm is evalu…
