Development of a measure of the relative reinforcing value of food versus parent-child interaction for young children
Trajectories of Reinforcement Sensitivity During Adolescence and Risk for Substance Use
Developmental neuroscience models suggest that changes in responsiveness to incentives contribute to increases in adolescent risk behavior, including substance use. Trajectories of sensitivity to reward (SR) and sensitivity to punishment (SP) were examined and tested as predictors of escalation of early substance use in a community sample of adolescents (N=765, mean baseline age 11.8 years, 54% female). SR and SP were assessed using a laboratory …
The Perceptions of Infant Distress Signals Varying in Pitch by Cocaine‐Using Mothers
Perceptual responses to infant distress signals were studied in 16 cocaine‐using and 15 comparison mothers. All mothers rated tape recordings of 48 replications of a newborn infant's hunger cry digitally altered to increase in fundamental frequency in 100‐Hz increments. Cries were rated on 4 perceptual (arousing, aversive, urgent, and sick) and 6 caregiving rating scale items (clean, cuddle, feed, give pacifier, pick up, and wait and see) used in…
Maternal Cocaine Use and Infant Behavior
This study examined the impact of maternal cocaine use and associated risk factors such as polysubstance use, maternal functioning, and caregiving on affect regulation during infancy. Participants were 45 mother‐infant dyads (19 cocaine exposed and 26 control infants) recruited at birth. Observations and maternal reports of infant behavior were obtained at 2 and 7 months of age, along with measures of pre‐ and postnatal substance use, maternal fu…
The Effects of Alcohol in Breast Milk on Infant Behavioral State and Mother‐Infant Feeding Interactions
The short‐term impact of infant exposure to alcohol in breast milk on mother‐infant interactions and infant arousal was examined. Fourteen mother‐infant dyads were tested on 2 occasions that consisted of an alcohol administration and a nonalcohol condition. Mother‐infant interactions during feeding were videotaped and coded for dyadic reciprocity, maternal noncontingency, and dyadic conflict. Infants were observed for 1 hr after receiving either …
Maternal substance use and mother–infant feeding interactions
The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of maternal polydrug cocaine use during pregnancy and associated risk factors such as maternal psychopathology and negative infant temperament on the quality of mother–infant feeding interactions at 2 months of infant age. Participants were 45 mother–infant dyads (19 cocaine‐exposed and 26 nonexposed) who were recruited at birth and assessed again 2 months of infant age. Mother–infant interactio…
Temperament and behavioral problems among infants in alcoholic families
This study examined the association between paternal alcoholism and 12‐month infant temperament and 18‐month behavior problems. The role of associated parental psychopathology and maternal drinking in exacerbating risk for maladaptive behavioral outcomes was also examined. Participants were 213 families (102 control families, 94 paternal alcoholic families, and 17 families with alcoholic fathers and heavy drinking mothers) who were assessed when …
