Cultural Encounters
On the Matter of Imitation
This essay revisits and reassesses the first major renewal of Spain's lyric tradition led by Juan Boscán and Garcilaso de la Vega. While not pretending to discover or disclose new revelations, it regards anew the historiography of the reception by both these poets of Petrarchism, a cultural project that has by now entered the mythology of Spanish poetry. I reflect on earlier Spanish literary histories, rereading their texts alongside late twentie…
Sequential Thermal Analysis of Complex Organic Mixtures
Sequential thermal analysis allows for deconvoluting the refractory nature and complexity of carbon mixtures embedded in mineral matrices for subsequent offline stable carbon and radiocarbon ( 14 C) isotope analyses. Originally developed to separate Holocene from more ancient sedimentary organic matter to improve dating of marine sediments, the Ramped Pyrolysis and Oxidation (RPO) apparatus, or informally, the “dirt burner” is now used to address…

The Matter from Which an Orange Colour Is Made
The painting The Descent from the Cross, painted in 1620 by Pedro Nunes (1586–1637), presents two large figures with orange-coloured fabrics with conservation problems. Through the analysis of two samples with several analytical techniques, especially scanning electron microscopy combined with X-ray spectroscopy and Raman microscopy, it was possible to conclude that the orange colour is due to a complex artificial pigment made of amorphous arseni…

The use of glass particles and its consequences in late 16th century oil painting
'Si no fuere tu hija ilustre'
The numbers of women writers of the early modern Spain currently identified have risen to over five hundred, with their writings catalogued and systematized by the Spanish data base Biblioteca de Escritoras Españolas (BIESES). The data base’s findings demonstrate the kinds of genres women writers selected, and includes archival documents, correspondence, and other kinds of documentation that reveal much more biographical information than previous…

Breaking into Tears
Breaking into Tears:Salicio's Refrain in Eclogue I Anne J. Cruz "The End is the Beginning of the End" —Smashing Pumpkins In Garcilaso's Eclogue I, the single refrain, "Salid sin duelo, lágrimas, corriendo," ends fully ten of the twelve stanzas that comprise Salicio's lament. That the estribillo, in its repetitive insistence, demands the shepherd's lachrymose response to his lover's rejection has long been considered its assigned function. After a…
O Contributo Da Conservação E Restauro Para O Conhecimento Da História De Um Objecto

Separated by more than half a century, Garcilaso de la Vega and Luis de Góngora chose the lyric genre to interrogate systems of power and the political and cultural changes that occurred from the early sixteenth century to the beginnings of the seventeenth century. Garcilaso's ‘new’ poetry and his conflictive engagement with the emerging Spanish empire made manifest the tensions between the epic's externalized political function and the lyrical e…

Problems of Analysis by FTIR of Calcium Sulphate–Based Preparatory Layers
This paper provides a contribution to FTIR analysis of calcium sulphate‐based grounds of paintings when a mixture of compounds with different degrees of hydration is present. The study is based on the analysis with that technique, electron microscopy coupled with energy‐dispersive X ‐ray spectrometry and X ‐ray diffraction of both the grounds of 16th‐century P ortuguese paintings and reference samples prepared with anhydrite and calcium sulphate …

On the Date and Contents of a Portuguese Medieval Technical Book on Illumination
The book this article discusses is a late medieval Portuguese technical text on illumination written with Hebraic characters. It belongs to a miscellaneous manuscript at Parma's Biblioteca Palatina. Discovered in 1803, it was attributed to Abraham ben Judah Ibn Hayyim and dated to 1262. Soon some authors assigned it to the fifteenth century. The paper's water-marks, recently observed, confirmed the fifteenth century date. Yet, the possibility tha…

More than just an expression of religious authority or an instrument of social control, the Inquisition was an arena where cultures met and clashed on both shores of the Atlantic. This pioneering volume examines how cultural identities were maintained despite oppression. Persecuted groups were able to survive the Inquisition by means of diverse strategieswhether Christianized Jews in Spain preserving their experiences in literature, or native Ame…
