  • Do males have a better chance of mating when the number of estrous females is equal to or greater than the males' ordinal rank? Testing the hypothesis in Japanese macaques

    Open Access•Hiroyuki Takahashi•ARTICLE•American Journal of Primatology•2004

This study was designed to test the hypothesis that male primates in multi‐male/multi‐female social groups with a clear male dominance hierarchy have a better chance of mating when the number of estrous females is equal to or greater than, as opposed to less than, the males' ordinal rank. I studied a Japanese macaque ( Macaca fuscata fuscata ) troop during mating seasons from 1992 to 1995. The mean daily operational sex ratio (OSR; the number of …

  • Changes of dominance rank, age, and tenure of wild Japanese macaque males in the kinkazan a troop during seven years

    Open Access•Hiroyuki Takahashi•ARTICLE•Primates•2002

  • Female reproductive parameters and fruit availability

    Open Access•Hiroyuki Takahashi•ARTICLE•American Journal of Primatology•2002

This study examined the onset of estrus, nutritional conditions during the mating season, and female reproductive parameters in a troop of unprovisioned Japanese macaques ( Macaca fuscata fuscata ). The mean interbirth interval (IBI) was 25.1 mo, suggesting a 2‐yr birth cycle. The mean IBI following the death of an infant before the mating season was only 19.8 mo, whereas the mean IBI was 27.8 mo when the infant survived. Estrus occurred during t…

Open Access•Yukio Takahata, Shigeru Suzuki et al.•ARTICLE•Primates•1998

  • Tobacco use among Japanese schoolchildren

Open Access•KOH-EI MINAGAWA, NOBUKI NISHIOKA et al.•ARTICLE•Health Promotion International•1992

Over the past two decades many studies have shown associations between smoking and increased health problems. Smoking among children is especially a major public health concern. Preventing young people from developing a smoking habit is an important goal for school health education. In Japan, it is difficult to collect accurate data regarding adolescent smoking behaviour, because in Japan smoking under the age of 20 is prohibited by law. Therefor…
