  • Covid-19 trouble at work

Open Access•K Qureshi, Jane Evered et al.•ARTICLE•SSM - Qualitative Research in…•2023

This paper addresses working people's experiences of managing covid-related sickness in relation to employment. Bringing together the sociology of chronic illness and disability, and of work and organisations, we contribute to understandings of Covid-19 experiences in the context of employment. We draw from interview studies of Covid-19 infection and recovery in four countries, the UK, the USA, Australia and Japan. This cross-country comparative …

  • Navigating responsible bio-political citizenship

    Open Access•A Dowrick, R Grob et al.•ARTICLE•SSM - Qualitative Research in…•2023

This paper aims to further understanding of discourses of responsible bio-political citizenship during the first year of the Covid-19 pandemic. This was an interview-based qualitative study comparing experiences of 103 people who were ill with Covid for the first time across 2020 in Japan, Germany, the USA and the UK. Comparative thematic analysis explored discussion of responsibility in relation to Covid illness, experiences of social fracture a…

  • Mineral acquisition of Japanese macaques

Open Access•Goro Hanya, Tamihisa Ohta et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Primatology•2023

Minerals provide micronutrients that function in various ways in the body, and they are necessary for the survival of animals. In this study, we first compared the mineral content of foods of wild Japanese macaques in lowland Yakushima with that of monkey chow used for many years to feed captive macaques and specifically formulated to obtain good health in captive macaques (National Research Council [NRC] recommendations). Second, we clarified th…

  • Stomach and colonic microbiome of wild Japanese macaques

Open Access•Wanyi Lee, Takashi Hayakawa et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Primatology•2021

Within the gastrointestinal tract, the physiochemical microenvironments are highly diversified among the different stages of food digestion. Accordingly, gut microbiome composition and function vary at different gut sites. In this study, we examine and compare the compositional and functional potential between the stomach and colonic microbiome of wild Japanese macaques ( Macaca fuscata yakui ) living in the evergreen forest of Yakushima Island. …

  • Spatial position-associated mating strategies employed by male Japanese macaques (Macaca fuscata yakui) in Yakushima

Open Access•Yosuke Otani, Akiko Sawada et al.•ARTICLE•Primates•2020

  • Island-wide Distribution of Japanese Macaques in Yakushima Revealed by Census Targeting Feces on Roads in 2017-2018

    Open Access•Goro Hanya, Shin-ichi YOSHIHIRO et al.•ARTICLE•Primate Research•2020

We studied the island-wide distribution of wild Japanese macaques in Yakushima (Macaca fuscata yakui) in May 2017 and 2018. We walked 165.4 km along roads and recorded the location of 842 macaque feces. We divided the roads into segments 50 m in length (N=3308) and analyzed the effect of the areas of farms and villages or conifer plantations around the segments and also the presence of hunting for pest control on the presence or absence of feces.…

  • Improving the standards for gut microbiome analysis of fecal samples

Open Access•Takashi Hayakawa, Akiko Sawada et al.•ARTICLE•Primates•2018

  • Mycophagy among Japanese macaques in Yakushima

Open Access•Akiko Sawada, Hirotoshi Sato et al.•ARTICLE•Primates•2014

  • Short‐term separation from groups by male Japanese macaques

Open Access•Yosuke Otani, Akiko Sawada et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Primatology•2014

To expand our understanding of fission-fusion behavior and determine its variability among primates, studies of both individual-based and group-based fission-fusion are necessary. We conducted a parallel tracking study of male and female Japanese macaques (Macaca fuscata yakui) during the non-mating season to clarify the general features of separate ranging by males of this species, an example of fission-fusion behavior, and to reveal its associa…
