  • Protective behavioral strategies for sexual aggression and risky sexual behavior

    Open Access•Teresa A Treat, William R Corbin et al.•ARTICLE•Aggressive Behavior•2021•References: 39

Sexual aggression (SA) is a serious public‐health problem on college campuses, and there is a pressing need for basic research fostering the development of novel prevention strategies. The current study (a) developed measures of protective behavioral strategies (PBS) for sexual aggression (SA) and risky sex (RS); (b) characterized college men's PBS use; and (c) evaluated whether those who reported engaging in SA and RS showed lower PBS use. Under…

  • Sexual‐perception processes in acquaintance‐targeted sexual aggression

    Open Access•Teresa A Treat, Richard J Viken•ARTICLE•Aggressive Behavior•2018•Cited by: 1•References: 25

This study analyzes data from seven published studies to examine whether three performance-based indices of men's misperception of women's sexual interest (MSI), derived from a self-report questionnaire, are associated with sexual-aggression history, rape-supportive attitudes, sociosexuality, problem drinking, and self-reported MSI. Almost 2000 undergraduate men judged the justifiability of a man's increasingly unwanted advances toward a woman on…

    Open Access•Jenny K Rinehart, Elizabeth A Yeater et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Social and Personal…•2018•Cited by: 4•References: 47

This study examined the cognitive processes underlying self-other differences in women's judgments of sexual victimization risk, as well as individual difference factors associated with those processes. Participants were 518 undergraduate women between the ages of 18 and 24. The majority of the women were either White (47.5%) or Hispanic (31.9%). Stimuli were 81 vignettes depicting social situations varying in degree of sexual victimization risk …

  • The Judge Specificity of Evaluations of Youth Social Behavior

    Open Access•Melanie A Dirks, Teresa A Treat et al.•ARTICLE•Social Development•2009•References: 10

Increasingly, theorists have suggested that social competence is an evaluative construct that will vary as a function of who is judging behavior. This study examined how two key groups in children's social environments—peers (N = 663, age range = 10.83–15.25 years) and teachers (N = 49)—rated the effectiveness of different behaviors generated by youth in response to physical, verbal, and relational provocation by peers. Results indicated that you…

  • Assessing Children's Representations of their Peer Group Using a Multidimensional Scaling Technique

Open Access•A Michele Lease, Richard M Mcfall et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Social and Personal…•2003•Cited by: 3•References: 28

The goal of this research was to examine whether multi-dimensional scaling (MDS) is a potentially reliable and valid method for assessing children's perceptions of their peer group. A total of 162 fourth- and fifth-grade students participated in two studies. MDS-derived depictions of the peer group were generated based on children's unconstrained (i.e., implicit) similarity judgments of same-sex dyads in their peer group. Overall, fit indices ind…
