  • Towards a competency-based doctoral curriculum at the University of Zambia

Open Access•Chisoni Mumba, James Maimbo Sichone et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Education•2023

We describe a collaborative, iterative, and participatory process that we undertook to develop and adopt a competency-based doctoral curriculum framework at the University of Zambia. There needs to be more than the traditional unstructured apprenticeship of PhD training in a knowledge-based economy where PhD graduates are expected to contribute to industry problem-solving. The lack of industry-driven competencies and, to some extent, limited skil…

  • Isolation of non-tuberculous mycobacteria from pastoral ecosystems of Uganda

Open Access•Clovice Kankya, Adrian Muwonge et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2011

The study detected a wide range of potentially pathogenic NTM from the environment around the pastoral communities in Uganda. Drinking untreated water and living in close contact with cattle or other domestic animals may be risk factors associated with the possibility of humans and animals acquiring NTM infections from these ecosystems

  • A longitudinal study of urinary dipstick parameters in wild chimpanzees ( Pan troglodytes verus ) in Côte d'Ivoire

Open Access•Siv Aina J Leendertz, Sonja Metzger et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Primatology•2010

We performed 796 dip‐stick tests on urine from 100 wild West African chimpanzees ( Pan troglodytes verus ) from 4 habituated groups in the tropical rain forest of Taï National Park, Cote d'Ivoire, to establish reference values for health monitoring. Specific gravity was also measured on 359 urine samples from 62 chimpanzees. The effect of age, sex, group, month, estrus, pregnancy, meat consumption, and acute respiratory disease on pH, leucocytes,…

  • Diagnostic efficiency of abattoir meat inspection service in Ethiopia to detect carcasses infected with Mycobacterium bovis

Open Access•Demelash Biffa, Asseged Bogale et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2010

The study results indicate that meat inspection protocols currently utilized in abattoirs are insufficient to detect the majority of TB lesions at the gross level. DA inspection protocols were demonstrated to improve the detection level by approximately 3-fold. The failure of current inspection techniques to detect approximately 70% of carcasses presented with grossly-visible lesions of TB at the slaughter-plants indicates the magnitude of meat-b…

  • Factors associated with pastoral community knowledge and occurrence of mycobacterial infections in Human-Animal Interface areas of Nakasongola and Mubende districts, Uganda

Open Access•Clovice Kankya, Adrian Muwonge et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2010

The socio-demographic, environmental and household related factors influence the risk of occurrence as well as pastoralists' knowledge of mycobacterial infections in the pastoral households at the human-environment-livestock/wildlife pastoral interface areas of Uganda

  • Incidence trend and risk factors for campylobacterinfections in humans in Norway

Open Access•Marianne Sandberg, Karin Nygård et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2006

The increase in incidence of Campylobacter infections in humans from 1995 to 2001 was statistically significant from 1998. Treated water was a protective factor against Campylobacter infections in humans with an IRR of 0.78 per percentage increase in people supplied. Campylobacter infections did not appear to be clustered in any particular county in Norway
