  • Long-term Variations of Snowfall Ratio in the Sea of Japan Side Area of Tohoku Region since the Late 17th Century

Open Access•Junpei Hirano, Naoko HASEGAWA et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Geography (Chigaku…•2025

Long-term variations of snowfall ratio during winter/early spring in the Sea of Japan side area of north-eastern Japan since 1665 are analyzed. Two long-term historical daily weather documents and instrumental meteorological data are used for this analysis. A time series of snowfall ratios from 1665 to 2005 is reconstructed. It is revealed that multi-decadal scale variations prevailed from the 17th to the early 20th century. In particular, the 17…

  • Archive Research into Dutch Naval Logbooks, and Preliminal Open Access of its Digitization

Open Access•Togo Tsukahara, Atsushi Ota et al.•ARTICLE•Itinerario•2025

We carried out research into nineteen century Dutch logbooks, especially a series of naval logbooks kept at the National Archive in the Hague. It is voluminous archive, with its 500 metres containing an enormous amount of data. Our initial concern was meteorological data recorded in logbooks. We have digitized part of the archive, for six ships with a duration of about one hundred months, in order to reconstruct the climate of the past. Also in t…

  • The Atmospheric Pressure Observations 1856-1858 by Father Louis Furet, at Naha, Japan

    Open Access•Gaston R Demarée, Pascal J Mailier et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Geography (Chigaku…•2018

  • Meteorology on the Southern Frontier of Japan's Empire

Masumi Zaiki, Togo Tsukahara•ARTICLE•East Asian Science Technology and…•2007

This paper outlines some characteristics of the academic activity in the Japanese colonial setting, with special reference to meteorology on the southern colonial frontier of Japan's Empire, through the works of Ogasawara Kazuo at Taihoku Imperial University. We first review the establishment of Japan's overseas meteorological network and the corresponding institutionalization of meteorology in that period. We will then consider Ogasawara's acade…
