Veel historici hebben er de laatste decennia op gewezen dat de gedachte van 350 jaar Nederlandse overheersing over Indonesië een mythe is. De verovering was een geleidelijk proces en pas na 1900 deed het koloniaal gezag zich in bijna alle uithoeken gelden.
