Preference-Approval Structures and Opportunity Sets
This paper first proposes the combination of preference-approval structures with ranking opportunity sets (i.e., collections of options), a relevant topic in welfare analysis. We suggest that various possibilities emerge, and we illustrate them with specific examples in finite contexts. Characterizations of three rankings of opportunity sets defined from preference-approval structures on the individual options are proven. Their representability b…
A characterization of delay averse Choquet integrals for intertemporal analysis
In an intertemporal framework with a finite horizon, we pose the problem of characterizing which discrete Choquet integrals satisfy strong aversion to delayed rewards. This property is arguably a minimal condition for a reasonable evaluation of vectors of rewards received at successive periods of time. We relate this property to other distributional axioms discussed for this framework. Particularly, we show that for monotonic evaluations, delay-a…
Sufficientarianism
Sufficientarianism is a prominent approach to distributive justice in political philosophy and in policy analyses. However, it is virtually absent from the formal normative economics literature. We analyze sufficientarianism axiomatically in the context of the allocation of 0–1 normalized well‐being in society. We present three characterizations of the core sufficientarian criterion, which counts the number of agents who attain a “good enough” le…
