Developing Chatbot Pragmatics Through Prompting Instruction in AI‐Assisted Communicative Practice
This quasi‐experimental study examines the impact of short‐term prompting instruction on the communicative performance of Czech learners of English in human–chatbot interaction, conceptualizing their prompting behavior as a context‐specific manifestation of pragmatic competence. The study was conducted in two phases (September 2024 and May 2026) and included four groups of participants with varying chatbot experience. Participants with (experimen…
Effectiveness of brief prompting instruction in AI-assisted communicative practice in foreign language classes
The case study, conducted in September 2024, investigates the impact of prompting instruction on the communicative skills of Czech learners of English. The main goal of the experiment was to see how pre-taught pragmatics-based prompting strategies affect human-chatbot interaction efficiency. The findings show that brief instruction in prompting significantly improves task completion, reduces misunderstandings and turn-taking, and enhances communi…
Political implicatures in Russian online media discourse
The study examines the role and linguistic repertoire of political implicatures in online media discourse. A case study of Kommersant ’s Telegram channel, based on a one-month feed, demonstrates that contributors employ multiple linguistic means of implicature expression to balance the legal restrictions on media coverage with the publishing house’s long-standing tradition of objective reporting. The current political climate in Russia encourages…
Reading ‘between the lines’
This case study demonstrates identification, explicitation, and validation of the implicatures found in the Kommersant (Russia) Telegram channel posts. It explores the primary reasons for Kommersant’s implicature use and the language means employed for the creation of the implicature. The contributors to the Kommersant Telegram channel use irony/sarcasm, creative neologisms, wordplay, metaphors, and legally imposed euphemisms for the expression o…
Conducting classroom research
The study posits that mid-sized groups of phonologically trained non-native speakers of English can collect prosodic data that are equivalent to English native-speakers’ annotations. The hypothesis is supported by the results of a classroom experimentinvolving an experimental group of English-proficient Czech (L1) learners annotating prominence and boundaries in English monological texts before and after additional phonological training aided by …
Manipulative use of political headlines in western and Russian online sources
The research identifies the amount of headline/article discrepancies in the corpora of western (the USA, the UK) and Russian online articles on sensitive political topics. A quarter of the western headlines and nearly half of the Russian headlines distort the publications they introduce. Language means and manipulative strategies employed by different sides vary considerably. Extensive use of expressive language and style variation are seen as le…
