Embodying Belhar
The social value of this article could be to initiate a reformation in the governance praxis of a Reformed church. Its academic value could be to suggest that an ecclesial imaginary could enrich reflection on church polity. The aim of the article was to identify weaknesses in the governance praxis of the Uniting Reformed Church in Southern Africa (URCSA) and to propose reforms to address them. The Belhar Confession shaped the formation of the URC…
Mission in vulnerability
This article is a revised version of the keynote address presented to the inaugural conference of the African region of the International Association for Mission Studies (IAMS) Africa in August 2024 in Stellenbosch. It argues that the formulation ‘Mission in vulnerability’ creates a more fruitful platform to engage missiologically with vulnerability than the announced conference theme ‘Mission as vulnerability’. The article uses a praxis-based mi…
Beatific presence
A reflection on Christian mission in a wounded world requires a focus on priestly praxis. This article explores the biblical notion of divine blessing as a key aspect of priestly mission praxis in wounded communities. Contribution: It interprets the Aaronic benediction (Nm 6:22–27) in the South African context as basis for a beatific priestly praxis that encompasses abundance, protection, compassion, restoration and peace in the midst of wounded …
White responses to Black Theology
This article reflects on a threefold typology of white responses to Black Theology (rejection-sympathy-solidarity) which I used in my doctoral thesis (1988). This article, which is dedicated to the memory of Vuyani Vellem, shows how the typology was used by him in a publication. It then points out a number of inadequacies in the typology and places it in a framework of encounters between the praxis of a Black Theology of Liberation (BTL) and a li…
The search for Ikhaya
The search for a new social contract in South Africa is explored in this paper by examining the terms ikhaya and oikos , and the notion of covenanting together to build a home across the fault lines that divide society. It uses a seven-point praxis matrix to reflect on the way in which a group of theologians could covenant together to overcome the fault line of racism to build a ‘deracial’ home. The paper explores the role that each of the seven …

Concrete spirituality
This article reflects on a number of liturgical innovations in the worship of Melodi ya Tshwane, an inner-city congregation of the Uniting Reformed Church in Southern Africa (URCSA). The focus of the innovations was to implement the understanding of justice in Article 4 of the Confession of Belhar, a confessional standard of the URCSA. The basic contention of the article is that well designed liturgies that facilitate experiences of beauty can nu…
Overcoming theological voicelessness in the new millennium
This opening paper of the Voicelessness conference in October 2011 gives an introduction to the theme. After tracing the semantic fields in which "voicelessness" is used, the paper develops a "phenomenology" of the concept. Seven types of voicelessness are identified and applied to theological voicelessness. The periodisation implied in "the new millennium" is also explored, before reflecting on the theological method needed to face these challen…
Faith to faith – Missiology as encounterology
This article responds to a book edited by Prof PGJ Meiring in 1996 on the religions of South Africa. It appreciates the integration between the fields of Religious Studies and Theology of Religions in the book, but suggests that a missiological approach should explore the inter-religious encounter, rather than merely what others believe or what we believe about the possibility of their being saved. An approach of “encounterology” requires: a) a h…

The Bible and Human Transformation
3 Articles I4 The Bible and Human Transformation: A Case Study from South Africa J.N.J. KRITZINGER, South Africa Introduction ' When reflecting on the relationship between the Bible and human transformation, one must not operate only in the realm of ideas, but in fact start with an analysis of societal processes. To assist in this I am going to describe a self-help initiative in a South African "squatter" community and try to indicate what role t…
