  • Knowledge Gaps about Mining Impacts on Sami Lands

Open Access•Laura Del Duca, Adriana Abril et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Northern Studies•2025

In the context of the EU’s Critical Raw Materials Act, which prioritizes mineral extraction and imposes time limits on project approvals, there have been a surge of policy proposals that aim to expedite licenses for green industry projects. Meanwhile, the academic literature largely overlooks risks for Indigenous Sami rights and reindeer herding. In this paper, we examine if a similar knowledge gap exists in a key part of the practitioner literat…

  • No Time to Waste

Open Access•Hannah Waddington, Sarah Dickin et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of International…•2025

Large amounts of time are wasted globally accessing water for domestic uses and sanitation, disproportionately impacting women and girls. We conducted a systematic review and meta‐analysis based on evidence mapping initiatives. Our synthesis of the evidence found a mean reduction of 15 min per trip for water supply interventions, and 3 min per trip for sanitation interventions, adding up to around 8 h per week and 3.5 h per week respectively at t…

  • Systematic mapping of gender equality and social inclusion in Wash interventions

Open Access•Biljana Macura, Ella Foggitt et al.•ARTICLE•BMJ Global Health•2023

INTRODUCTION: Poor access to water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) services threatens population health and contributes to gender and social inequalities, especially in low-resource settings. Despite awareness in the WASH sector of the importance of promoting gender equality and social inclusion (GESI) to address these inequalities, evaluations of interventions focus largely on health outcomes, while gender equality and other social outcomes are r…

  • Circular nutrient solutions for agriculture and wastewater – a review of technologies and practices

Open Access•Arno Rosemarin, Biljana Macura et al.•ARTICLE•Current Opinion in Environmental…•2020

This paper summarizes key findings from a series of systematic reviews and comprehensive efforts to collate evidence and expert opinions on circular solutions for recovery and reuse of nutrients and carbon from different waste streams in the agriculture and wastewater sectors. We identify established and emerging approaches for transformation towards a more circular nutrient economy with relevance to SDGs 6 and 14. The paper cites the example of …

  • Quantifying the potential for climate change mitigation of consumption options

Open Access•Diana Ivanova, John Barrett et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2020

Background. Around two-thirds of global GHG emissions are directly and indirectly linked to household consumption, with a global average of about 6 tCO 2 eq/cap. The average per capita carbon footprint of North America and Europe amount to 13.4 and 7.5 tCO 2 eq/cap, respectively, while that of Africa and the Middle East—to 1.7 tCO 2 eq/cap on average. Changes in consumption patterns to low-carbon alternatives therefore present a great and urgentl…
