Social Dynamics, Knowledge Spheres, and Technological Transfers in Balearic Island Pottery during the 2nd Millennium b.c
The Middle and Late Bronze Ages can be characterized by an increase in connectivity, and the Balearic Islands are no exception. In order to more deeply explore this phenomenon, we analyze pottery forming processes by studying manufacturing traces, which allow us to observe technological practices and the transfer of technical know-how. Our case study is centered around a technological analysis of the most common type of pottery: a cask shaped ves…
Bioavailable 87 Sr/ 86 Sr variability and Bronze and Iron Ages caprine mobility on the Balearic Islands (Spain)
This paper presents the most extensive 87Sr/86Sr datasets from Late Prehistory contexts in addition to bioavailable 87Sr/86Sr values for baseline characterization on the Balearic Islands. A total of 149 caprine dental enamel samples from Mallorca, Menorca, and Formentera islands (Spain), and 35 environmental baseline samples covering the main geologies of these islands are presented here. In addition, a combination of strontium and oxygen sequent…
Watching the horizon
During the Middle and Late Bronze Age, communities across the Balearic Islands (Western Mediterranean) established a high degree of connectivity both between islands as well as between the islands and the mainland. Evidence of this phenomenon can be traced not only through the existence of foreign materials, but also through shared practices, habitus, and objects across the islands. To better understand the maritime mobility practices that underp…
In Pursuit of the Analytical Unit. Island Archaeology as a Case Study
The present study offers an epistemological and ontological historiographical review of the concept of the unit of analysis using island archaeology as a case study. We carry out a critical investigation to lay out the main ideas used to define units of analysis, and we consider the discourse that has emerged between this and other fields when defining such a concept. From an epistemological point of view, we can define three distinct strategies:…
Almost the same, but not quite
In the present work we carry out a study of all the Late Bronze Age swords recorded in the Balearic Islands. They represent a set of local practices and traditions alongside foreign ideas and archetypes. To carry out the study, we employ a strategy that joins technological and archaeometric analyses with approaches that consider isotopes and typologies. Of note among the data considered is the importance of metal coming from deposits in Linares, …
The long and winding road
In this paper we address the biography of a set of copper nails recovered in 1998 from a Late Iron Age structure located at the archaeological site of Puig de Sa Morisca (Mallorca, Spain). The archaeometric and typological analyses conducted on these nails allowed us to relate them to nautical technology, as well as to approach the origin of the raw materials and the production processes involved in their manufacture. The biographical information…
The “island laboratory” revisited
We wish to dedicate this Special Issue to the memory of our dear friend and colleague Carole McCartney (1965–2021), whose significant contribution to the archaeology of Cyprus remains fundamental to our understanding of island archaeology in the Mediterranean and beyond.Disclosure statementNo potential conflict of interest was reported by the authors
Paths Across the Sea
Throughout history the Balearic Islands have had different degrees of social connectivity between the islands themselves and between them and the mainland. While the influence of historical dynamics is well documented, less so is the impact of winds, currents, and meteo-marine conditions. This paper analyses the meteo-marine conditions for coastal navigation to better understand how these configured the main maritime routes across the islands. We…
Potters at the World’s End? Pottery Production and Resilience in Formentera (Balearic Islands, Spain) during the Bronze Age
Human communities that inhabit small islands often express some kind of fragility and ‘islandness’ that requires the development of certain strategies to minimize the risks involved in occupying hazardous environments. In this paper, we interpret the technological choices developed by Bronze Age potters’ communities from the small island of Formentera (Balearic Islands, Spain) by studying certain features of pottery pastes and some typological as…
Maritime connections in the Western Mediterranean and access to copper resources in the Balearic Islands during the Late Bronze Age
A very notable phenomenon took place during the final stages of the Late Bronze Age in the Balearic Islands: ritualistic, votive deposits of certain bronze objects. Of the various deposits that have been discovered, that at Es Mitjà Gran in Mallorca is among the most significant in terms of both the variety and number of objects found. Isotope analyses have allowed some of these objects to be linked with various areas around the Western Mediterra…
Connecting Architectures across the Landscape
Architecture has been one of the key features in studying the first millennium bc in the Balearic Islands. The primary goal of this research is to analyse how monumental communal architecture enabled the construction of enduring social spaces and how the role of these spaces within the community can be understood through the relations that conform across the landscape. To do so we will focus on the Late Bronze Age (1100–850 bc) and the Talayotic …

The Production and Use of Cordage in the Balearic Bronze Age
The study of plant-fibre remains in the Mediterranean is limited due to the scarce archaeological sites where this organic material has been preserved. However, the Late Bronze Age burial site of Cova des Pas in Minorca (1100–800 cal BC) has provided an extraordinary assemblage of well-preserved organic materials, including an important number of cordage remains. The aim of this paper is to present the results of the study of more than 600 cordag…
Archaeometric characterization of Iron Age indigenous pottery from the staggered turriform of Son Ferrer, Mallorca, Spain
This paper examines indigenous ceramic production at the Iron Age site of Son Ferrer in Western Mallorca in the Balearic Islands (Western Mediterranean) through archaeometric characterization using chemical and mineropetrographic techniques. Results show an important shift in ceramic production through time. The Late Iron Age (Post‐Talaiotic) pottery found at the site reflects the coexistence of various technological recipes for making pots, in c…
Enhancing “Places” Through Archaeological Heritage in Sun, Sand, and Sea Touristic Coastal Areas
Many islands and coastal areas worldwide, particularly in warm climates, have experienced a large and sustained population and urban growth driven by mass tourism. This development has created new social spaces that have broken the social and economic dynamics which have traditionally defined these areas. This new reality has led to new socioeconomic praxes that have improved the life of the local communities, but also entailed new conflicts and …
Matching Data
The Son Ferrer archaeological site presents a series of successive occupations spanning a long period of time. At the beginning of the Iron Age (∼850 BC), a staggered turriform structure was built for a ritual purpose over an artificial hypogeum that had already been used as a collective necropolis during the Early Bronze Age (∼1800–1500 BC). Later, in the post-Talayotic phase (Second Iron Age, 550–123 BC), the hypogeum was again reused as a coll…
The ways people move
This paper focuses on the study of the communication networks that linked the different Balearic communities during the late Bronze Age. To achieve this goal, weather conditions, sea routes, infrastructures of mobility, naval technology and navigational techniques associated with these movements are reconstructed and analysed. It is argued that communication networks structured the perception of space and time as well as generating a continuous s…
