  • Sexual intimacy and aging

Open Access•Michele Scheinkman, Suzanne Iasenza et al.•ARTICLE•Family Process•2022

In our work at the Intimacies Project at The Ackerman Institute for the Family we became aware of a gap in attention about sexuality and aging in the couple and family therapy field. In this article, we provide an integrative framework to guide therapists on how to address problems of sexuality and aging in the therapy room. Starting from considerations about the social context of aging and the self of the therapist , we contend that when normati…

  • Holocene sea-level variability from Chesapeake Bay Tidal Marshes, USA

    Open Access•Thomas M Cronin, Megan Clevenger et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2019•References: 7

We reconstructed the last 10,000 years of Holocene relative sea-level rise (RSLR) from sediment core records near Chesapeake Bay, eastern United States, including new marsh records from the Potomac and Rappahannock Rivers, Virginia. Results show mean RSLR rates of 2.6 mm yr −1 from 10 to 8 kilo-annum (ka) due to combined final ice-sheet melting during deglaciation and glacio-isostatic adjustment (GIA subsidence). Mean RSLR rates from ~6 ka to pre…

  • Paleoenvironmental changes on the northeastern and southwestern Black Sea shelves during the Holocene

    Open Access•Elena V Ivanova, Ivar O Murdmaa et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2012

  • Timing and duration of North American glacial lake discharges and the Younger Dryas climate reversal

    Open Access•John A Rayburn, Thomas M Cronin et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2011

Radiocarbon-dated sediment cores from the Champlain Valley (northeastern USA) contain stratigraphic and micropaleontologic evidence for multiple, high-magnitude, freshwater discharges from North American proglacial lakes to the North Atlantic. Of particular interest are two large, closely spaced outflows that entered the North Atlantic Ocean via the St. Lawrence estuary about 13,200–12,900 cal yr BP, near the beginning of the Younger Dryas cold e…

  • Modelling river discharge and precipitation from estuarine salinity in the northern Chesapeake Bay

    Open Access•Casey Saenger, Thomas M Cronin et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2006•References: 4

Long-term chronologies of precipitation can provide a baseline against which twentieth-century trends in rainfall can be evaluated in terms of natural variability and anthropogenic influence. However, there are relatively few methods to quantitatively reconstruct palaeoprecipitation and river discharge compared with proxies of other climatic factors, such as temperature. We developed autoregressive and least squares statistical models relating Ch…

  • An association of benthic foraminifera and gypsum in Holocene sediments of estuarine Chesapeake Bay, USA

    Open Access•J H Cann, John Cann et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2004•References: 1

Two cores of Holocene sediments recovered from the Cape Charles Channel of Chesapeake Bay yielded radiocarbon ages of about 6.8 to 5.8 ka for the lower intervals. Fossil foraminifera preserved in these lower sediments are dominated by species of Elphidium, which make up about 90% of the assemblage throughout, and probably signify deposition in hypersaline waters. Buccella frigida and Ammonia beccarii are the only other species commonly present. H…

  • Late-Holocene climate and ecosystem history from Chesapeake Bay sediment cores, USA

    Open Access•Debra A Willard, Thomas M Cronin et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2003•Cited by: 3•References: 3

Palaeoclimate records from late-Holocene sediments in Chesapeake Bay, the largest estuary in the USA, provide evidence that both decadal to centennial climate variability and European colonization had severe impacts on the watershed and estuary. Using pollen and dinoflagellate cysts as proxies for mid-Atlantic regional precipitation, estuarine salinity and dissolved oxygen (DO) during the last 2300 years, we identified four dry intervals, centred…

  • Radiocarbon Dating, Chronologic Framework, and Changes in Accumulation Rates of Holocene Estuarine Sediments from Chesapeake Bay

    Open Access•Steven M Colman, Pattie C Baucom et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2002

Rapidly accumulating Holocene sediments in estuaries commonly are difficult to sample and date. In Chesapeake Bay, we obtained sediment cores as much as 20 m in length and used numerous radiocarbon ages measured by accelerator mass spectrometry methods to provide the first detailed chronologies of Holocene sediment accumulation in the bay. Carbon in these sediments is a complex mixture of materials from a variety of sources. Analyses of different…

  • Late Stage 5 Glacio-isostatic Sea in the St. Lawrence Valley, Canada and United States

Open Access•Serge Occhietti, Sanda Balescu et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•1996

Although post-glacial marine sediments of late Wisconsinan and early Holocene age are common in eastern Canada and the northeastern United States, remnants of older Pleistocene marine sediments are scarce. A fossiliferous marine clay that predates the classical Wisconsinan was recently discovered in the St. Lawrence Valley. A dominantly estuarine environment is inferred from the geochemistry of the shells (δ 18 O = −7.1) and from benthic foramini…

  • Biostratigraphic Correlation of Pleistocene Marine Deposits and Sea Levels, Atlantic Coastal Plain of the Southeastern United States

    Open Access•Thomas M Cronin•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•1980

Marine ostracodes from 50 localities were studied to determine the age and elevation of Pleistocene sea levels in the Atlantic coastal plain from Maryland to northern Florida. Using ostracode taxon and concurrent ranges, published planktic biostratigraphic, paleomagnetic, and radiometric data, ostracode assemblage zones representing early (1.8-1.0 my), middle (0.7-0.4 my), and late (0.3-0.01 my) Pleistocene deposition were recognized and used as …

  • Late-Wisconsin Marine Environments of the Champlain Valley (New York, Quebec)

    Open Access•Thomas M Cronin•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•1977

The Champlain Sea occupied the Champlain Valley from about 12,500 to 10,000 yr BP. Following an initial maximum limit of inundation, isostatic crustal rebound caused the sea's gradual regression, which is documented by the parallel alignment of tilted shoreline features at successively low elevations along a north-south profile. Two new radiocarbon shell dates, 11,665 ± 175 (QC 200), elevation 95 m, and 10,300 ± 180 (QC 199), elevation 47 m, date…
