  • The enduring world forest carbon sink

Open Access•Yude Pan, Richard A Birdsey et al.•ARTICLE•Nature•2024

The uptake of carbon dioxide (CO2) by terrestrial ecosystems is critical for moderating climate change1. To provide a ground-based long-term assessment of the contribution of forests to terrestrial CO2 uptake, we synthesized in situ forest data from boreal, temperate and tropical biomes spanning three decades. We found that the carbon sink in global forests was steady, at 3.6 ± 0.4 Pg C yr−1 in the 1990s and 2000s, and 3.5 ± 0.4 Pg C yr−1 in the …

  • An assessment of recent peat forest disturbances and their drivers in the Cuvette Centrale, Africa

Open Access•Karimon Nesha, Martin Herold et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2024

The largest tropical peatland complex in the Cuvette Centrale is marked by persistent knowledge gaps. We assessed recent peat forest disturbances and their direct drivers from 2019 to 2021 in Cuvette Centrale, spanning the Republic of Congo (ROC) and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Utilizing peatland maps and Radar for Detecting Deforestation alert data, we analyzed spatial and temporal patterns of disturbances. Further, we examined 2267 …

  • Carbon stocks and fluxes in Asia-Pacific mangroves: Current knowledge and gaps

Open Access•Sahadev Sharma, Raghab Ray et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2023

Mangrove forest plays a key role in regulating climate change, earth carbon cycling and other biogeochemical processes within blue carbon ecosystems. Therefore, mangrove forests should be incorporated into Earth system climate models with the aim of understanding future climate change. Despite multiple carbon stock and flux assessments taking place over the past couple of decades, concrete knowledge of carbon source/sink patterns is largely lacki…

  • Network analysis of blue carbon governance process in Indonesia

Open Access•Ines Ayostina, Lucentezza Napitupulu et al.•ARTICLE•Marine Policy•2022

To align with international climate efforts to remain within 1.5 degrees of the earth temperature, Indonesia requires concerted measures from actors to preserve and restore carbon rich ecosystems, especially blue carbon ecosystem. Although studies have suggested the importance of blue carbon ecosystems in contributing to Indonesian climate action, translating science to policy remains a challenge. Mapping actors and the pattern of information exc…

  • Biofuel Plantations on Forested Lands: Double Jeopardy for Biodiversity and Climate

Open Access•Finn Danielsen, HENDRIEN BEUKEMA et al.•ARTICLE•Conservation Biology•2009

The growing demand for biofuels is promoting the expansion of a number of agricultural commodities, including oil palm (Elaeis guineensis). Oil‐palm plantations cover over 13 million ha, primarily in Southeast Asia, where they have directly or indirectly replaced tropical rainforest. We explored the impact of the spread of oil‐palm plantations on greenhouse gas emission and biodiversity. We assessed changes in carbon stocks with changing land use…
