Embracing diversity during researcher evaluation in the academic scientific environment
The academic bottleneck. Academia is highly competitive with universitiesproducing a huge number of PhD graduates relative to the available number ofacademic positions worldwide (Gould, 2015). For example, only 12.8%of PhDgraduates can attain academic positions in the USA (Larson et al. 2014). Thisbottleneck is also narrowing due to economic cuts in universities and researchinstitutions (OECD, 2016)
Entropy vs. human ontogeny: The Shannon information measure; a reliable general indicator of human health
A measure of health based on exact sciences is not considered by social sciences to evaluate human development. We propose the H measure of information of Shannon ([1948]. “A Mathematical Theory of Communication.” The Bell Systems Technical Journal 27 (3): 379–423, 623–656), renamed as H cto, as a general indicator of human health which can be subsequently aggregated at any statistical level. Several advantages of H cto are explained: (i) connect…
Endorheic currents in ecology: An example of the effects from scientific specialization and interdisciplinary isolation
Mainstream ecological thought is explored in three sections: (i) Epistemological traits. Given the typical scientific development and the necessity of preserving our intellectual heritage, the conservatism outlined in (i) is cyclical, so its stages are graphically summarized. (ii) Methodological benchmarks antithetically derived from (i), in order to get faster advancement consistent with the growing environmental challenges which spur ecological…
