Biopolitics and Reproductive Injustice
Sexuality plays a central role in Foucault's philosophy, from his four volume series on the topic to his ideas about medicalization, biopower, and the abnormal. Many of Foucault's concepts, such as governmentality, biopower, and biopolitics, are useful for analyzing the effects of laws and policies regulating reproduction and sexuality. This article brings Foucault's ideas to bear on two aspects of sexuality, reproduction and trans health care, t…
A Feminist Social Justice Approach for Social Change
This article extends and develops themes from my book, Women’s Activism, Feminism, and Social Justice, in response to commentary by Professors Aragon and Nagel. In my remarks I explore what I call “the tricky territory of rights,” as well as feminism, identity, intersectionality, heterogeneity, and complexity, and alternative epistemologies. My interlocuters and I are all skeptical about the notion of human rights for a range of reasons: rights d…
A sexual and reproductive health rights approach to menstruation
While increased attention to menstruation as a significant health issue for women and girls is positive, some menstrual interventions promoted by Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) programmes primarily focus on hygiene, infrastructure, and product provision. This focus fails to challenge the social and cultural stigma surrounding menstruation, as well as interconnected issues of gender discrimination, marginalisation, and inequality. We advoca…
Introduction to Indigenizing and Decolonizing Feminist Philosophy
This special issue of Hypatia aims to cultivate and encourage theorizing about Indigenous 1 philosophies and decolonizing methodologies. Although feminist theorizing has explored the diverse legacies and experiences of marginalized voices, including Indigenous concerns, philosophy has failed to acknowledge and systematically examine its own role in perpetuating colonial oppression. This special issue aims to explore how Indigenous philosophy migh…
Global Gender Justice
I argue that Iris Marion Young’s concept of political responsibility is well suited for transnational feminism analyses. Young’s work reveals the intersections of ethical, social, and political theory; her model of political responsibility articulates a view of shared social and political responsibility for the structural conditions of exploitation and domination. Young’s theory of political responsibility provides an account that views responsib…

Women's Rights in a Global Context
The classical liberal theories of rights overemphasize individual autonomy. Feminists from a variety of approaches criticize this individualistic model. Other feminists argue that rights discourse is essential to help end discrimination against women. However, these proponents of international women's rights too often focus on legal and political rights at the expense of economic rights. In a global context it is important to recognize the interc…

Foucaultand the Subject of Feminism
Possibilities for a Nondominated Female Subjectivity
This essay examines one of the contributions that Sandra Bartky makes to feminist theory. Bartky critiques Foucault for his gender blind treatment of the disciplines and social practices that create “docile bodies.” She introduces several gender specific disciplines and practices that illustrate that the production of bodies is itself gender coded. This essay argues that social practices are not monolithic, but are composed of various strands tha…
Effects of Snow and Ice on Waterfowl Distribution in the Central Canadian Arctic Islands
Aerial surveys were conducted in 1974 and 1975 to determine distribution and abundance of waterfowl along the coasts of Somerset, Cornwallis, Little Cornwallis, and Byam Martin islands, Boothia Peninsula, as well as parts of Prince of Wales, Devon, Bathurst, and Melville islands. Waterfowl nested normally in 1975 but were prevented from doing so in 1974 by a late thaw. In 1974, but not in 1975, Barrow Strait was ice free by 1 June. Densities of m…
The Reactions of Muskoxen to Snowmobile Harassment
Twenty-one harassment trials on 14 muskox herds were conducted in April and May 1982 on eastern Melville Island, N.W.T. Each trial consisted of a slow approach directly toward the herd on a snowmobile. The snowmobile, returned along its approach path as soon as 50% of the herd was alerted. Distance at which the first animal reacted (IRD) averaged 345.0 m(range 162-650 m) and the distance from the herd at closest approach (CAD) averaged 267.2 m(ra…
Waterfowl Populations in Eastern Lancaster Sound and Western Baffin Bay
The seasonal distributions of oldsquaws (Clangula hyemalis), common eiders (Somateria mollissima) and king eiders (S. spectabilis) were determined through aerial surveys in eastern Lancaster Sound (1976, 1978 and 1979) and northwest Baffin Bay (1978, 1979). Sightings of geese are summarized in an Appendix. The major spring influx of both eiders occurs about the second week of May but most oldsquaws do not arrive until the first half of June. In s…
