The Subclassification of Southern Wakashan
The Southern Wakashan (or Nootkan) languages exhibit a sort of chain relationship, from south to north: Makah, Nitinat, and Nootka. Given the intermediate geographic position of Nitinat with respect to Makah (situated more to the south) and Nootka (situated more to the north), one can ask which of these languages is most closely related to Nitinat. Elamite and Dravidian: Further Evidence of Relationship [and Comments and Reply]
This paper presents the correspondences in verbal morphologies to support the existing lexical and other morphological evidence (reported elsewhere) that the Dravidian language family is closely cognate with Elamite. It uses primarily Achaemenid Elamite, for which the most detail is available, and in particular the description of the verb given by R. T. Hallock. A great deal of use is made of Dravidian Ver Morphology by P. S. Subrahmanyam. For on…

On the Prehistory of Nez Perce Vowel Harmony
Alternative hypotheses regarding the vowel system of Proto-Sahaptian and the transition to the two daughter languages, Nez Perce and Sahaptin, are examined. The proto-language may possibly have had a five-vowel system ∗/i e a o u/, identical to that of Nez Perce, and already showing the same pattern of vowel harmony alternations. But a reconstruction of the vocalic system before the development of vowel harmony, whether or not this predated Proto…
