  • Of Mamak stalls and Malaysian weather

    Open Access•Antonio Paoliello•ARTICLE•Comunicación•2023

Malaysia is home to a sizeable ethnic Chinese community that speaks several Sinitic languages. As such, it is not only an importer of Sinophone culture, but also an important site of Sinitic-language cultural production. In the field of popular music, Malaysia has been a hotbed of many transnational Sinophone talents whose Malaysianness, however, has often gone unnoticed. Nevertheless, some international artists such as Ah Niu have consistently s…

  • Female Bonding and Marginality in Shang Wanyun’s novella “Xialihe” (1978)

    Open Access•Antonio Paoliello•ARTICLE•CLCWeb Comparative Literature and…•2022

This article explores the representation of homosociality between two marginalized female characters in “Xialihe” (夏麗赫) (1978), a novella by Sinophone Malaysian writer Shang Wanyun (商晚) (1952-1995). Although some scholars have suggested that the writer’s preoccupation with the intimate world of women started only in the 1980s, I argue that “Xialihe” already highlights issues such as female intimacy and women’s social marginalization. The text rep…

  • Bie zai tiqi” and You Mean the World to Me

    Open Access•Antonio Paoliello•ARTICLE•Open Cultural Studies•2020

This article aims at exploring the subversive nature of two Sinophone Malaysian cultural products, namely “Bie zai tiqi” (2002) a short story by Ho Sok Fong and You Mean the World to Me (2017), a full-length feature film by director Saw Teong Hin. I argue that, despite their differences, both fictional products use powerful metafictional and metanarrative devices to challenge factuality. In doing so, they not only blur the fine line between ficti…
