Sensibilidad a la violencia en adolescentes mexicanos
This study examines the impact of exposure to violence and legal cynicism on adolescents' sensitivity to violence in Mexico. The study employs a quantitative and cross-sectional design and uses data from the International Self-Report Delinquency Study (ISRD-4) in Mexico. The sample consists of 2534 adolescents aged 12 to 19 years. A multilevel model is estimated to assess both individual and contextual effects, with the aggregate level correspond…
Pathways to Legal Cynicism in Mexican Adolescents
This study examines pathways to legal cynicism among adolescents in Mexico, a context marked by low institutional trust, corruption, and insecurity. Using a three-dimensional measure of legal cynicism (legal antipathy, legal corruption, and low legal legitimacy), data from the ISRD-4 were analyzed through structural equation modeling. Results reveal that individual predispositions (self-control, morality) and self-reported delinquency are most st…
Institutional Performance and Trust. Local Criminal Justice Systems and Fear of Crime in Mexico Previous studies have found that the police influence fear of crime in Mexico, but little has been examined about the effect of other actors in the criminal justice system. This study evaluates whether citizen trust and the performance of local law enforcement and criminal justice institutions have an influence on this variable. Using data from ENVIPE …
Autoridad policial, socialización legal y justicia procedimental
(analytical)Police is one of the worst evaluated institutions in Mexico and its relationship with youth is fragile. This paper seeks to identify which variables influence police legitimacy among adolescents, operationalized as the perception of the duty to obey. For this purpose, data from 1011 surveys applied to high school students in the Guadalajara Metropolitan Area, as part of the International Self-Reported Delinquency Study, are used. The …
Expectations versus experience
There is a large body of evidence on how perceptions of procedural justice affect legitimacy and compliance. Despite the consistency of the findings, there is less research on the impact that citizens’ experiences with courts may have on public perceptions. This article examines this issue through an online survey of a national sample of Spanish citizens, controlling for the effects of the individual’s role in the process (defendant or victim) an…
This paper explores the social and cultural background of fear of crime in Mexico. Using data from a survey applied to undergraduate students, the results of a structural equation modeling provide evidence that perceived corruption and low confidence in police partly explain the fear of crime expressed by respondents, even after controlling for the effects of victimization. The discussion focuses on the need for more comprehensive policies to c…
