The Role of the Built Environment in the Community Participation of Adults Aging With Long-Term Physical Disabilities
The purpose of this scoping review was to characterize the nature and scope of existing literature on the role of built environments in the community participation of adults aging with physical disabilities (AAwPD). A scoping review was selected to identify the volume and types of evidence available, pinpoint knowledge gaps, and clarify key concepts. Twenty-one articles were included for review, all of which were published within the last 20 year…
Identifying built environment factors influencing the community participation of adults aging with long-term physical disabilities
This study qualitatively explored how adults aging with long-term physical disabilities perceive the built environment to influence their community participation. A convenience sample of community-dwelling adults with long-term physical disabilities ages 45-65 participated in virtual semi-structured interviews until thematic saturation was reached ( n =20). Data were analyzed using interpretive phenomenological analysis. Five themes were identifi…

Inventory of Youth Adaptation to Loss (Iyal)
The Inventory of Youth Adaptation to Loss (IYAL) was developed to understand the feelings and social supports experienced by bereaved youth to develop an evidence-base for bereavement interventions. The sample included 400 youth ages 9-17, permitting robust psychometric testing of the IYAL. To evaluate the reliability of the IYAL, the sample framework was national in scope, encompassed a range of different types of youth bereavement programs, and…
Examination of Community Participation of Adults With Disabilities
Objective: Explore community participation between adults with disabilities ⩽50 and >50 years and between early-(⩽40) and late-(>40) onset disability. Method: A survey examining participation was conducted with a national convenience sample of 692 community-dwelling adults with disabilities. Results: Participants ⩽50 reported presence of more ( p 50 had higher ( p p p p p p p p p p ⩽ .01), and beauty salons/barbers ( p p p p Discussion: Understan…
Care Coordination Models Improve Quality of Care for Adults Aging With Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities
A significant gap remains between existing evidence-based care coordination techniques for the general population and those that have been successfully translated for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). Two models funded through the Health Care Innovation Awards have dedicated resources to the translation of evidence-based practices in community or clinical settings. This study analyzes quasi-experimental mixed-methods …

Individual Development Accounts and Homeownership among Low-income Adults with Disabilities
We examined the long-term effects of Individual Development Accounts (IDAs), savings accounts that match funds deposited by participants for qualified purposes, on homeownership rates among study participants with disabilities in a randomized experiment. Results from a 10-year follow-up of the IDAs indicate that rates of homeownership were nearly 10 percentage points higher for treatment participants with disabilities than for control-group membe…
An Investigation of Activity Profiles of Older Adults
The use of a 5-level categorical activity profile variable may allow more complex analyses of activity that capture the "whole person." There is clearly a vulnerable group of low-activity individuals as well as a High Activity group that may represent the "active ageing" vision
A building blocks strategy for developing bridging and knowledge transfer between ageing and disability care and policy
The need for bridging between disability and ageing is significant for two primary reasons: 1) the growing population of persons aging with long-term chronic conditions and disabilities who have not been part of most traditional long-term care supports and service programs for older adults, and 2) the increasing trends towards both integrated health and social care systems and merged care systems for older and younger adults with disabilities

Key focal areas for bridging the fields of aging and disability
Based upon research presented at the 2011 Festival of International Conferences on Caregiving, Disability, Aging and Technology (FICCDAT)-and specifically the Growing Older with a Disability (GOWD) conference, this paper identifies areas where bridging building between aging and disability is needed to support older adults aging into or with disabilities. Five focal areas emerged: 1) The Need to Forward Bridging Between Aging and Disability Secto…

Exploring Saving Performance in an IDA Program
Asset development policies have been promoted as a means to create a more inclusive “ownership society.” During the past few years, asset-building scholarship has begun to focus specifically on marginalized groups, including people with disabilities. Using a sample of individual development account (IDA) program participants (N = 376), the authors examine effects of disability status on IDA saving performance. They also assess variations in savin…
Local, regional and national experiences on bridging
Introduction: Bridge building work in the US is primarily local and voluntary, involving professionals at individual agencies and organizations (public and private) who work towards specific goals. However, federal mandates intended to reduce nursing home admissions and increase access to home and community based services through new model collaboration programs are hastening this work
Crossing network lines between ageing and disability in the United States
In the US, ageing and disability public policies, programs, and service systems have historically separate origins, age-based categorical eligibility, and distinct funding streams. This division creates barriers in serving persons ageing with disability transitioning from disability to ageing service systems and for older adults obtaining independent living services in disability systems
Disabilities and Health
The authors believe that a coordinated national agenda on health and wellness research regarding persons with disabilities that (a) focuses disparate national efforts and (b) advances a unified holistic model is needed. They propose a framework for such an agenda that includes five core principles and six issue areas, with recommendations. The five principles address good health as a normative expectation, a theory-driven knowledge base, heteroge…
Conceptualizing Disability
Empirical analysis of disability identity has great potential to improve understanding of the role of disability status in identity politics. Despite ongoing discussions of the relevance of disability identity in the disability rights movement and political actions related to disability, there is limited research into its nature and its underlying psychological, social, and political constructs. This may in part be caused by the lack of a theoret…
