  • Socioeconomic inequity in extreme outcomes within very pre-term and/or very low birthweight infants

Open Access•Hanifa Pilvar, Catia Nicodemo et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2026

Background Pre-term birth (< 37 weeks' gestation) is a major cause of neonatal mortality, with very pre-term (< 32 weeks' gestation) and extremely pre-term (< 28 weeks' gestation) infants facing the highest risks. While socioeconomic disparities in pre-term birth are well-documented, relatively little is known about inequities among the highest risk subgroups. Methods Using data from the RECAP Pre-term Project across six high-income countries, we…

  • The cost-effectiveness and cost-consequences of a school-based social worker intervention

Open Access•Elizabeth-Ann Schroeder, David Westlake et al.•ARTICLE•Children and Youth Services Review•2024•References: 7

The SWIS trial compared a social worker assigned to schools (intervention) versus usual practice. • The mean total cost of the SWIS intervention per school was £106,771.30. • Variations in staff recruitment to SWIS teams led to differences in costs for local authorities. • Costs were re-estimated to account for staff time and quality of implementation. • The probability of SWIS being cost-effective for averting a section 47 enquiry at cost-effect…

  • Are they still determining? Analysis of associations among ethnicity, gender, socioeconomic status, neighborhood factors, and Covid-19 vaccination

Open Access•Bokyung Kim, Seoyeon Hong et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Communication•2023

Introduction This study explores associations among adult vaccination, ethnicity, gender, and socioeconomic variables such as educational attainment and income, as well as neighborhood factors. Methods A telephone quota sample of New Jersey adults ( N = 1,984) was used to text associations among proposed predictors of vaccination behaviors. Results Our multivariate logistic regression analyses found that certain races/ethnicity, respondents' hous…

  • Health-related quality of life of children born very preterm

Open Access•Sungwook Kim, Lazaros Andronis et al.•ARTICLE•Quality of Life Research•2022

The findings suggest that HRQoL is particularly impaired by extremely preterm birth and the concomitant complications of preterm birth such as BPD and severe non-respiratory morbidity

  • Participatory learning and action cycles with women's groups to prevent neonatal death in low-resource settings

    Open Access•Anni-Maria Pulkki-Brännström, Hassan Haghparast-Bidgoli et al.•ARTICLE•Health Policy and Planning•2021

WHO recommends participatory learning and action cycles with women's groups as a cost-effective strategy to reduce neonatal deaths. Coverage is a determinant of intervention effectiveness, but little is known about why cost-effectiveness estimates vary significantly. This article reanalyses primary cost data from six trials in India, Nepal, Bangladesh and Malawi to describe resource use, explore reasons for differences in costs and cost-effective…

  • A method for measuring spatial effects on socioeconomic inequalities using the concentration index

Open Access•Sungwook Kim, Hassan Haghparast-Bidgoli et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal for Equity…•2020

Our findings suggest that men from lower socioeconomic groups are more likely to receive an HIV test after adjustment for spatial effects. This study develops a novel methodological approach that incorporates estimation of spatial effects into a common approach to equity analysis. We find that a significant component of inequalities in HIV uptake in Malawi driven by non-need factors can be explained by spatial effects. When the spatial model was …

  • Can voluntary pooled procurement reduce the price of antiretroviral drugs? a case study of Efavirenz

Open Access•Sung Wook Kim, Sungwook Kim et al.•ARTICLE•Health Policy and Planning•2017•References: 37

PURPOSE: : A number of strategies have aimed to assist countries in procuring antiretroviral therapy (ARV) at lower prices. In 2009, as the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria (GFATM) commenced a voluntary pooled procurement scheme, however, the impact of the scheme on ARV prices remains uncertain. This study aims to estimate the effect of VPP on drug prices using Efavirenz as a case study. METHODS: This analysis uses WHO Global p…

  • Socio-economic inequity in HIV testing in Malawi

Open Access•Sung Wook Kim, Sungwook Kim et al.•ARTICLE•Global Health Action•2016

BACKGROUND: Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is a significant contributor to Malawi's burden of disease. Despite a number of studies describing socio-economic differences in HIV prevalence, there is a paucity of evidence on socio-economic inequity in HIV testing in Malawi. OBJECTIVE: To assess horizontal inequity (HI) in HIV testing in Malawi. DESIGN: Data from the Demographic and Health Surveys (DHSs) 2004 and 2010 in Malawi are used for the a…
