Impact of parental adverse childhood experiences on offspring anxiety and depressive symptoms: A three-year longitudinal study
Research indicates the intergenerational effects of parents’ adverse childhood experiences on anxiety and depressive symptoms in offspring. However, few studies have investigated the longitudinal mechanisms linking parents’ adverse childhood experiences and offspring anxiety and depressive symptoms. This study aimed to explore the longitudinal link between parents’ adverse childhood experiences and offspring anxiety and depressive symptoms throug…
The trajectory of functional status among older adults with chronic diseases and the association with social relationships
Background: Functional status crucially affects healthy aging. Identifying trajectory of functional status and related determinants is important. We aimed to identify the trajectory of functional status over 6 years among older adults with chronic diseases and its association with social relationships. Methods: A latent class growth model analysis was conducted to explore the trajectory of functional status using three time points over 6 years. A…
The relationship between parental adverse childhood experiences and offspring preschool readiness: The mediating role of psychological resilience
Parental adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) may represent a risk for offspring school readiness. Previous studies suggested that children's psychological resilience may mediate between the intergenerational transmission of parental ACEs and offspring school readiness. Using structural equation modeling, our study aimed to explore the role of psychological resilience in the association between parental ACEs and preschool readiness. A sample of 7…
Longitudinal assessment of the relationship between frailty and social relationships among Japanese older adults: A random intercept cross-lagged panel model
The results suggest that frailty was associated with lower levels of social relationships. Frailty improvement programs can be combined with interventions to enhance social relationships, which will be beneficial in preventing frailty. The results emphasize the importance of combining clinical treatments of frailty with interventions to improve social relationships
Measurement invariance and country difference in children’s social skills development: Evidence from Japanese and Chinese samples
Conceptualizing Callous-Unemotional Traits in Chinese Preschoolers: Factor Structure and Measurement Invariance
With the increasing use of the Inventory of Callous Unemotional Traits (ICU) to examine callous-unemotional traits, few studies have explicitly tested the most appropriate ICU factor structures and measurement invariance in Chinese children at preschool age. This study was conducted with a large community sample of 2055 Chinese preschoolers (53.6% male, M age = 62.23 months, SD = 9.91) to test the most appropriate model of ICU and the measurement…
The Mediating Role of Callous–Unemotional Traits in the Relationship between Parental Aggression and Behavioral Problems among Chinese Preschoolers
It is well known that aggressive parenting is associated with behavioral problems among Western children in their early childhood, but this has rarely been examined among Chinese preschoolers. The purpose of this study is to explore the relationship between aggressive parenting, callous-unemotional traits (CU traits), and behavioral problems among a large Chinese preschool sample. Data were collected in Wuhu city, China, from 1879 preschoolers (5…
Adverse Childhood Experiences, Resilience, and Emotional Problems in Young Chinese Children
Resilience plays an important role in the relationship between adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and children's health. Young children are often neglected in ACEs research and suffer from the negative consequences of ACEs. However, few studies have focused on the relationship between ACEs and emotional problems in young Chinese children and the moderating and mediating effect of resilience on this relationship. This study included young childr…
Bidirectional relations between self-control and cooperation among Japanese preschoolers: A random-intercept cross-lagged panel analysis
Parent-preferred childcare environment styles: A latent class analysis and association with parental stress
Subtyping of Internalizing and Externalizing Behaviors in Japanese Community-Based Children: A Latent Class Analysis and Association with Family Activities
Externalizing and internalizing behavioral problems occurs at a high rate among children. However, this has rarely been examined among Japanese children using a person-oriented method. Hence, this study aims to explore its subtypes and clarify their association with family-based group activities. We conducted a cross-sectional survey in a typical community-based suburban area for all families with primary school children in Japan. We investigated…
Development of Social Skills in Kindergarten: A Latent Class Growth Modeling Approach
Social skills acquired during early childhood are often the foundation for success later in life. Using a nationwide survey dataset in Japan, this study aims to explore the multiple growth trajectories of social skills among children in kindergarten by using a latent class growth modeling approach. It also examines whether, and to what extent, the home-rearing environment at early age predict trajectories of social skills development. Children in…
