  • Staging the Diaspora

    Open Access•Chang Tan•ARTICLE•The Art Bulletin•2026

Art historians rarely study the backdrops, props, and costumes used in studio photography or the artisans who made them. Here I examine such “stagecraft” captured by May’s Photo Studio, San Francisco, uncovering the collaborations and rivalries among its diverse makers and performers. I show how they assembled optical illusions that bridge seemingly disparate chronotopes, fabricated surfaces that convey material and emotional cravings, and layere…

  • The Spatial Autoregressive Panel Data Model with Spatial Moving Average Errors

    Open Access•Chang Tan, J Paul Elhorst•ARTICLE•Geographical Analysis•2024

This paper advocates the wider use of the spatial autoregressive (AR) panel data model with spatial moving average (MA) errors, individual and time effects, and different spatial weight matrices for each spatial lag. We demonstrate the practical relevance of this model, derive and investigate the asymptotic properties of a simple quasi maximum likelihood within estimator when is large and is finite, and provide an empirical example explaining mil…

  • Rewriting the Heart Sutra

Chang Tan, Chang Wei Tan•ARTICLE•positions asia critique•2024•References: 3

This article studies the Chinese artist Qiu Zhijie's (b. 1969) three experimental “rewrites” of the canonical text Heart Sutra and their geopolitical connotations within and beyond China. Examining Qiu's copious writings as well as curatorial and artistic practices over a decade, the article shows how the artist's evolving views of Buddhism have triggered, justified, and added nuances to his shifting positions in art and politics, including asser…

  • Parameterizing Spatial Weight Matrices in Spatial Econometric Models

    Open Access•Chang Tan, Michaela Kesina et al.•ARTICLE•Political Analysis•2024•Cited by: 1•References: 10

Spatial econometric models allow for interactions among cross-sectional units through spatial weight matrices. This paper parameterizes each spatial weight matrix in the widely used spatial Durbin model with a different instead of one common distance decay parameter, using negative exponential and inverse distance matrices. We propose a joint estimation approach of the decay and response parameters, and we investigate its performance in a Monte C…

  • China’s pathway to carbon neutrality for the iron and steel industry

    Open Access•Xiang Yu, Chang Tan•ARTICLE•Global Environmental Change•2022•Cited by: 5•References: 1

  • Reduced health burden and economic benefits of cleaner fuel usage from household energy consumption across rural and urban China

Open Access•Chenxi Lu, Shaohui Zhang et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2021

Energy consumption in the residential sector is increasing rapidly in China. This study applies an integrated assessment model to investigate the adverse impacts of household energy consumption by various fuel types across rural and urban areas on age- and sex-specific premature deaths associated with PM 2.5 pollution at provincial levels for 2015. We further estimate the economic and health co-benefits of a switch from solid fuels to electricity…

  • Impact of parent-child separation on children’s social-emotional development

Open Access•Huifeng Shi, Yuanyuan Wang et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2021

LBC under 3 years had a high risk of social-emotional problems in poor rural China. Cumulative exposure to maternal migration may be detrimental to LBC's early social-emotional development. Programs are necessary to support these children as well as their families

  • Early maternal separation and development of left-behind children under 3 years of age in rural China

Open Access•Mengshi Li, Xiaoqian Duan et al.•ARTICLE•Children and Youth Services Review•2021•Cited by: 2•References: 37

  • Politics of the (In)Visible

Chang Tan, Chang Wei Tan•ARTICLE•Art Journal•2020

An analysis of the artwork Yumen and its connections with contemporary aesthetics and politics

  • Caregivers’ depressive symptoms and social–emotional development of left-behind children under 3 years old in poor rural China

Open Access•Chang Tan, Chunxia Zhao et al.•ARTICLE•Children and Youth Services Review•2020•Cited by: 1•References: 55

  • Art for/of the Masses

Chang Tan, Chang Wei Tan•ARTICLE•Third Text•2012•Cited by: 2

Communism has influenced art practices for nearly a century, yet studies on how artists from post-Socialist countries respond to their Communist heritage remain limited in both scope and depth. This article examines how Chinese artists today appropriated, investigated and performed their revolutionary legacy. This article surveys a variety of practices while focusing on the Long March Project (2002), a group project that re-enacted a legendary ep…
