  • Poverty dynamics and graduation from conditional cash transfers

Open Access•Juan Miguel Villa, Miguel Niño‐zarazúa•ARTICLE•The Journal of Economic Inequality•2018•References: 9

The effects of conditional cash transfers (CCTs) on poverty and well-being have been widely studied. However, there is limited knowledge on how a CCT should respond to the dynamics of poverty. How should program administrators treat beneficiaries that exit poverty in period t-1, but exhibit a high probability of falling into poverty in period t? This is a relevant, yet unanswered question. This paper provides an analysis of the implications of po…

  • Economic and Political Inclusion in Human Development Conditional Income Transfer Programmes in Latin America

    Open Access•Armando Barrientos, Juan Miguel Villa•ARTICLE•Social Policy and Society•2016•Cited by: 2•References: 10

Most countries in Latin America have implemented human development conditional income transfer programmes to address intergenerational persistence of poverty. Typically, these programmes provide income transfers to households in poverty, conditional on children attending school and on household members attending health clinics. Evaluations have established that programmes reach their explicit short- and medium-term objectives, especially as regar…

  • Social Transfers and Growth

    Juan Miguel Villa•ARTICLE•Economic Development and Cultural…•2016•Cited by: 2•References: 26

The effects of social transfers on growth are still unclear. The limitations of national accounts at subnational levels in developing countries have confined the analysis to the use of simulation models and household-level experimental data. This article contributes to the empirical literature by assessing the effects of Colombia’s Familias en Accion, a human development cash transfer program, on municipal growth rates and per capita growth. The …

  • Antipoverty Transfers and Labour Market Outcomes

Open Access•Armando Barrientos, Juan Miguel Villa•ARTICLE•The Journal of Development Studies•2015

The article estimates the impact of Familias en Acción, a human development conditional cash transfer programme, on adult labour market outcomes in urban areas in Colombia. Relying on a regression discontinuity design and a large panel dataset, the article finds significant, largely positive, but heterogeneous programme effects on labour market outcomes. The findings suggest that antipoverty transfers enable a re-allocation of household productiv…

  • Social transfers and child protection in the South

Open Access•Armando Barrientos, Jasmina Byrne et al.•ARTICLE•Children and Youth Services Review•2014•Cited by: 4•References: 13

Most low and middle-income countries have implemented programmes providing transfers to families in poverty, often with a focus on children. The paper examines the potential effects of social transfers in these countries on child protection outcomes: the reduction of violence, exploitation and abuse of children, family separation and improved birth registration. The analysis is based on database including information on 79 impact evaluations in 2…
