  • Personal Social Networks of Women with Justice-Involvement in Substance Use Treatment

Meeyoung O Min, Edward Salisbury et al.•ARTICLE•Women & Criminal Justice•2026

Substance use disorder (SUD) is a key common correlate of criminal offending among women, yet few studies have explored their personal network characteristics, limiting our understanding of the social context in which justice-involved women with SUD are embedded. The present study interviewed 375 women with SUD, including 299 (80%) women with a history of justice involvement, from three county-funded, women-only intensive treatment programs in th…

  • Starting With Girls and Their Resilience in Mind

Open Access•Linsey A Belisle, Edward Salisbury et al.•ARTICLE•Criminal Justice and Behavior•2021

Despite the numerous differences between boys and girls in the juvenile justice system, there are currently no gender-responsive risk/needs assessments for system-impacted girls, thereby limiting agencies to the use of gender-neutral risk/needs assessments. This article examines commonly used gender-neutral risk/needs assessments and illustrates how these instruments are not truly “neutral.” We argue that predictive validity is not enough to demo…

  • Cross-national differences in women’s imprisonment rates

Breanna Boppre, Terance D Miethe et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2021•References: 62

Prior research examined cross-national differences in imprisonment, yet few studies considered the specific nature of women’s imprisonment. The current study fills an important gap in the literature by assessing the socio-economic factors associated with women’s imprisonment rates. Cross-national differences in women’s imprisonment are examined using a social threat perspective. Our study demonstrates that the relationship between gender inequali…

  • Women’s Risk and Needs Assessment (WRNA) in the Czech Republic

Tereza Trejbalová, Edward Salisbury et al.•ARTICLE•Women & Criminal Justice•2020

The focus of practitioners and academics alike has been shifting toward gender-responsive treatment of justice-involved women. One instrument that accounts for the realities of justice-involved women is the Women’s Needs and Risks Assessment (WRNA). In order to inquire about its validity outside the United States, this tool was piloted in the Czech Republic in 2016 with 148 women prisoners. The study examined whether the WRNA is a valid tool for …

  • Expanding the Feminist Pathways Perspective beyond the United States

Edward Salisbury, Emily J Salisbury et al.•ARTICLE•Women & Criminal Justice•2018

A large body of knowledge within the criminological discipline has demonstrated that women and girls have distinct social and psychological risk factors that contribute to both their initial onset, and continued engagement, in offending behavior. However, most of this research has focused on U.S. samples of women offenders. Using mixed methods, the current research investigated the offense dynamics and possible risk factors for women’s imprisonme…

  • Women’s Pathways to Serious and Habitual Crime

Open Access•Tim Brennan, Markus Breitenbach et al.•ARTICLE•Criminal Justice and Behavior•2012

Qualitative approaches for identifying and characterizing women’s pathways to crime are being augmented by quantitative methods. This study applies quantitative taxonomic methods in disaggregating a large sample of women offenders from a prison population to identify diverse pathway prototypes. An array of gender-responsive and gender-neutral factors and full criminal histories was used to characterize each pathway. Cross-sample and cross-method …

  • Gender-Responsive Lessons Learned and Policy Implications for Women in Prison

Open Access•Emily M Wright, PATRICIA VAN VOORHIS et al.•ARTICLE•Criminal Justice and Behavior•2012

The authors review evidence of gender-responsive factors for women in prisons. Some gender-responsive needs function as risk factors in prison settings and contribute to women’s maladjustment to prison; guided by these findings, the authors outline ways in which prison management, staff members, and programming can better serve female prisoners by being more gender informed. The authors suggest that prisons provide treatment and programming servi…

  • Gendered Pathways
