  • Food habits of young Swedish and Norwegian vegetarians and omnivores

Open Access•Christel L Larsson, Christel Larsson et al.•ARTICLE•Public Health Nutrition•2001

Objective: To determine the prevalence of vegetarianism and compare food habits among vegetarian and omnivorous adolescents in Sweden and Norway. Design: Cross-sectional study by questionnaire in Sweden and Norway to gather information about food habits. Setting: The municipalities of Umeå and Stockholm in Sweden, and Bergen in Norway. Subjects: In total 2041 ninth-grade students (578 from Umeå, 504 from Stockholm and 959 from Bergen), mean age 1…

  • Underreporting of energy intake in repeated 24-hour recalls related to gender, age, weight status, day of interview, educational level, reported food intake, smoking habits and area of living

Open Access•Gunnar Johansson, Åsa Wikman et al.•ARTICLE•Public Health Nutrition•2001

Objective: The aims of the present study were (1) to evaluate the degree to which underreporting of energy intake by repeated 24-hour recalls was related to gender, age, weight status, day of interview, educational level, smoking habits and area of living, and (2) to compare the dietary characteristics of underreporters with those of others. Design: Cross-sectional study. Ten 24-hour recalls were performed during a one-year period. Setting: The V…

  • A method to compensate for incomplete 24-hour urine collections in nutritional epidemiology studies

Open Access•Gunnar Johansson, Sheila Bingham et al.•ARTICLE•Public Health Nutrition•1999

Objective: To develop a method to make use of incomplete 24-hour urinary samples in nutritional epidemiology, especially when validating the dietary intake of nitrogen (protein), sodium and potassium. Design: Urinary data for men and women collected in three different studies were evaluated. The concentration of para -aminobenzoic acid (PABA) in one 24-hour urine sample per person was compared with the concentrations of nitrogen, sodium, potassiu…

  • Validation with biological markers for food intake of a dietary assessment method used by Swedish women with three different with dietary preferences

Open Access•Gunnar Johansson, Agneta Åkesson et al.•ARTICLE•Public Health Nutrition•1998

Objectives: To validate a dietary assessment method, a 4-day food record together with a duplicate portion technique, with biological markers for food intake. Design: Four days of duplicate portions were collected in parallel with food recording. A 24-h urine sample and the faeces corresponding to the food intake (using a coloured marker) were collected. Completeness of urine and faeces collections was assessed using para -aminobenzoic acid (PABA…

  • Toward a New Theory of Vision Studies in Wide-Angle Space Perception

    Gunnar Johansson, Erik Borjesson•ARTICLE•Ecological Psychology•1989

This is the first article from a project aimed at developing a new type of theory for visual space perception. The article is limited to the first basic part of this theory: the wide-angle recording of slants of plane surfaces under self-motion. This article is composed of two parts. The first part presents the theory for wide-angle slant perception. Its approach must be characterized as unique in the sense that it utilizes the hemispheric form o…

  • Examination stress decreases plasma level of luteinizing hormone in male students

    Gunnar Johansson, G G Johansson et al.•ARTICLE•Psychosomatic Medicine•1988

Plasma levels of luteinizing hormone (LH) and testosterone were determined by radioimmunoassay in medical students just before (Exp. 1) and after (Exp. 2) an academic examination and corresponding control periods. Before the examination (Exp. 1), the males' LH values were lower than their control levels, but there was no such difference in the females. Testosterone levels were unaffected in both sexes. There was no correlation between the values …

  • Examination stress affects plasma levels of TSH and thyroid hormones differently in females and males

    Gunnar Johansson, Marja‐Leena Laakso et al.•ARTICLE•Psychosomatic Medicine•1987

Plasma levels of TSH and thyroid hormones in 22 male and 27 female medical students were determined by radioimmunoassay before and after an academic examination. The plasma values of TSH were slightly higher in both sexes on the examination day than on the control days. The values were lower after the examination than before it in females but not in males. Plasma levels of T3 were higher in males than in females on the examination day. In contras…
