  • Effects of Interrupting an Intraoral Meal on Meal Size and Meal Duration in Rats

    Open Access•Randy J Seeley, Joel M Kaplan et al.•ARTICLE•Appetite•1993

Most experiments on satiation do not separate the contribution to meal size of cumulative intake from that of time since meal onset. To assess the relative contributions of temporal and intake factors, the amount consumed of intraorally infused 12.5% glucose solution, delivered at a fixed rate of 1.0 ml/min, was assessed after tests that were interrupted for variable durations (Experiments I and II) beginning at different times within the test me…

  • Bite size, ingestion rate, and meal size in lean and obese women

    Open Access•Theresa A Spiegel, Joel M Kaplan et al.•ARTICLE•Appetite•1993•Cited by: 23•References: 12

The effect of bite size on ingestion rate, satiation, and meal size was studied in nine lean and nine obese women. On separate days, subjects were given one of three bite sizes of sandwiches and one of two bite sizes of bagels with cream cheese to eat in a laboratory lunch. Decreasing bite size significantly lowered ingestion rate for the whole meal. The effect was most pronounced at the beginning of meals. As bite size decreased from 15 to 5 g, …
