Institutional Structures as Mediators for Diversifying State Education Policymaking Bodies
Drawing on longitudinal data of state K–12 education policymaker demographics, we examine education policymaking body diversity over time, and across states and institutional structures. Though dominated by white businessmen, females and professional educators increased their presence at the education policymaking table. There was little movement in representation of policymakers of color. Institutional structures such as election type and profes…
Social Capital Development in Community College Alumni Who Studied Abroad
This qualitative study explores how US community college students who studied abroad use their existing social capital to enhance their engagement with other students and host country residents. The study also shows that students who studied abroad develop new social capitals for bridging and bonding with others. Data collection consisted of two rounds of in-depth interviews with 27 alumni students as well as a survey on participant background. F…
Impasses of Affective Inquiry in Pandemic Times
This paper puzzles through the doubled impasses of our affective inquiry into learning communities in a college setting. In so doing, we take on the incommensurabilities of our field site and post qualitative inquiry, providing an example of critical qualitative inquiry where theory and practice are made to work together at their limits, both compromising with each other, neither subordinated to the other. Affective inquiry, an instantiation of c…
Doerr, Neriko Musha. (2019). Transforming study abroad
In her new handbook, Transforming Study Abroad: A Handbook (2019), Doerr takes the discourse surrounding several education abroad concepts in a new direction. She emphasizes the need for a rigorous theoretical framework throughout the education abroad experience for students to successfully process their experiences while studying abroad. Transforming Study Abroad is a well-researched and practical handbook that includes sample questions for stud…

Job Exposure Matrix for Electric Shock Risks with Their Uncertainties
We present an update to an electric shock job exposure matrix (JEM) that assigned ordinal electric shocks exposure for 501 occupational titles based on electric shocks and electrocutions from two available data sources and expert judgment. Using formal expert elicitation and starting with data on electric injury, we arrive at a consensus-based JEM. In our new JEM, we quantify exposures by adding three new dimensions: (1) the elicited median propo…
Using a Density-Variation/Compactness Measure to Evaluate Redistricting Plans for Partisan Bias and Electoral Responsiveness
The clear association between population density and partisan preference in elections suggests that redistricting plans would be better aligned with principles of partisan fairness if there were a deliberate effort to balance population density across legislative districts. To balance population density without sacrificing geometric compactness, we define a density-variation/compactness (DVC) measure that can serve as a one-number summary of a pr…
