  • Quantifying the Economic Impact of High-Speed Rail on Less Economically Developed Areas

Open Access•Juan Wang, Eleni Bardaka et al.•ARTICLE•International Regional Science…•2026

Little is known about how high-speed rail (HSR) affects less economically developed regions. Our study focuses on the effects of the Lanzhou-Xinjiang (Lanxin) HSR line, located in the less developed Western region of China. We estimate difference-in-differences models to evaluate the causal relationship between economic outcomes and the HSR line, and we test the robustness of our results using the Synthetic Control Method. Panel data spanning the…

  • Exploring the quantitative impact of medical marijuana dispensaries on residential sale prices in Oklahoma

    Open Access•Joshua Clark, Michael S Delgado•ARTICLE•Empirical Economics•2026

Medical marijuana was legalized in Oklahoma as recently as 2018, and since then Oklahoma has rapidly grown to have the largest number of medical marijuana dispensaries of any states in the USA. What have been the impacts of this rapid proliferation of legalized medical marijuana? We use a hedonic pricing model to assess how legalized marijuana dispensary activity (both distance to the nearest dispensary and the number of nearby dispensaries) has …

  • Social interactions and household fuel choice

Open Access•Hang Fang, Xuechen Jiang et al.•ARTICLE•Environment and Development…•2025

We study household fuel choice in rural China through the lens of social interactions, deploying a structural discrete choice interaction model to explain peer-dependence in household fuel choice. The data comes from the China Family Panel Studies 2010–2020, and we use multiple strategies to examine the robustness of the social interaction effects. We find a significant endogenous social effect, meaning that whether a household chooses non-solid …

  • Risk, arbitrage, and spatial price relationships

    Open Access•Meilin Ma, Michael S Delgado et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Development Economics•2023•References: 3

Spatial market integration, an important means to increase market efficiency and boost economic development, is often affected by policy changes such as trade liberalization and trade restrictions. With unique weekly data on provincial hog prices, we use the 2018 outbreak of African Swine Fever (ASF) in China and the subsequent ban on cross-province shipment of hogs as a natural experiment to study dynamic spatial mechanisms underlying market int…

  • Hierarchy and spatial contagion

    Open Access•Elizabeth A Dobis, Michael S Delgado et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Economic Geography•2019•References: 13

We use a spatial hierarchical regression model to isolate the effects of spatial contagion and urban hierarchy on population levels and apply this model to a unique dataset of American urban areas from 1990 to 2010 that includes all but the smallest rural communities. By disentangling the effects of urban hierarchy and spatial contagion on population levels, we find that large cities are characterized by urban agglomeration and spatial complement…
