  • Food-related sensory activities for children in educational settings

Open Access•H Weiser, Maria Waling et al.•ARTICLE•Appetite•2026

Hands-on activities, where children explore food with their senses, are of interest for their potential to promote healthy eating. Various food-related sensory activities (FRSA) have been developed as interventions, but design, delivery and outcome variation challenge a robust evaluation of programs. Some argue that a focus on health is narrow and that FRSA could foster other competences, including non-health dimensions of sustainability. The obj…

  • Qualitative Content Analysis

    Open Access•Ingela Bohm, Joachim Sundqvist•ARTICLE•Qualitative Report•2025•Cited by: 1

Qualitative content analysis (QCA) is a flexible method of analysis, applicable within many epistemologies and on many kinds of data. This makes it suitable as a general introduction to qualitative methods, but students and other beginners sometimes have trouble grasping the associated concepts and ways of thinking. To facilitate their first foray into this new territory, we propose a five-step process of QCA that does not presuppose any foreknow…

  • Balance, self-efficacy and collective individualism

    Open Access•Ingela Bohm, Carita Bengs•ARTICLE•Health Education Journal•2023

Background: In health education, there is a risk of giving overly prescriptive recommendations, potentially activating conflicting in-group norms that reduce message receptiveness. For example, the notion of ‘unhealthy youth’ is a stereotype which suggests that young people are expected to make unhealthy choices. If such in-group norms are activated as part of health education, the will to emulate healthy out-group behaviour may decrease. Objecti…

  • Cultural sustainability

    Open Access•Ingela Bohm•ARTICLE•Food Culture & Society•2022•Cited by: 1•References: 4

The school subject home economics (HE) provides education on food, meals, and sustainability. Drawing on observations and interviews with eight Swedish HE teachers during 2018, this paper conceptualizes HE as an ambiguous perceived space between the conceived space of state-controlled learning goals and the lived space of a traditional Swedish, feminine, middle-class home. The subject’s focus on cooking and housework lowered its status and margin…

  • We can never close the book and say, ‘We’ll continue next week’” – The rhythms of cooking and learning to cook in Swedish Home economics

    Open Access•Ingela Bohm•ARTICLE•Food Culture & Society•2021•References: 7

The Swedish school subject Home Economics (HE) covers complex content to do with cooking and sustainable development, but is allocated relatively few hours. I draw on observations of HE lessons and interviews with teachers to show how experiences of time poverty can be conceptualized as arrhythmia in relation to the requirements of the curriculum, scheduling, cultural expectations, and the unpredictable nature of student cooking. By viewing cooki…
