Evolving in Typological Research
Research has long demonstrated that adolescents with sexual problem behaviors (PSB-A) have variations in developmental antecedents and types of sexually problematic behaviors. The knowledge of adult and adolescent between-group variation has contributed to further complexities in classifying within-group differences in adolescents with typological research being at the forefront of this conversation. Despite some research using existing data sour…
Using machine‐learning methods to identify early‐life predictors of 11‐year language outcome
BACKGROUND: Language is foundational for neurodevelopment and quality of life, but an estimated 10% of children have a language disorder at age 5. Many children shift between classifications of typical and low language if assessed at multiple times in the early years, making it difficult to identify which children will have persisting difficulties and benefit most from support. This study aims to identify a parsimonious set of preschool indicator…

Governmentality versus choice in contemporary special education
This article provides an understanding of childhood welfare from a radical perspective, showing how power within the special education system affects the discourse of ‘choice’ for parents. The analysis unmasks the disciplinary power operating within the special education system and explores the manner in which such power affects choice for parents. In turn, the analysis suggests that although disciplinary power offers little sites for resistance,…
The impact of hearing impairment on quality of life of older people
This study aimed to investigate the impact of hearing impairment on the quality of life of Australian older people. Relationships between (a) hearing impairment and hearing disability/handicap, (b) hearing impairment and health-related quality of life, and (c) hearing disability/handicap and health-related quality of life were examined. Ninety-three community-based subjects were assessed using pure-tone audiometry as a measure of impairment. A di…
A study of the resolution of paediatric dysphagia following traumatic brain injury
Despite the potentially life-threatening complications of dysphagia (Martin, Corlew, Woods, Olson and Golopol, 1994), and the recognized benefits of early and informed intervention in the acute care setting (Mackay, Bernstein, Chapman, Morgan & Milazzo, 1992), limited research exists on the acute phase or the resolution of swallowing impairment in children subsequent to traumatic brain injury (TBI) (Rowe, 1999; Ward and Morgan, in press). The cur…
