Shared decision making in eating disorders
Patients with EDs perceive themselves as equally involved in treatment decision as those with other major mental disorders, yet clinicians report lower SDM in this group suggesting a perceptual gap. SDM in EDs is affected by socio-demographic and clinical variables. Further development of SDM techniques is crucial for improving the therapeutic alliance and addressing the cognitive and motivational features of EDs
Using latent class analysis to identify different clinical profiles according to food addiction symptoms in obesity with and without binge eating disorder
Applying a clinical staging model in patients affected by schizophrenia spectrum disorder
Baseline predictors, such as familial predisposition to schizophrenia, neurodevelopmental impairment, childhood adversities, treatment delay, negative symptoms, neurological impairment, and inadequate early response to treatment, independently largely explained the staging variance. The clinical staging model, grounded in the extended course of psychosis, exhibited sound validity and feasibility, even without the use of biological or neuroimaging…
Psychometric properties of the Opening Minds Stigma Scale for Health Care Providers in 32 European countries – A bifactor Esem representation
Aims To measure the stigma of healthcare providers toward people suffering from mental illness, the Opening Minds Stigma Scale for Health Care Providers (OMS-HC) is a commonly applied instrument. However, this scale has not been thoroughly validated in many European countries, its psychometric properties are still unknown and data on practicing psychiatrists is lacking. Therefore, this multicenter study aimed to assess the psychometric characteri…
Sleep Disturbances in Generalized Anxiety Disorder
Patients with a generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) often report preeminent sleep disturbances. Recently, calcium homeostasis gained interest because of its role in the regulation of sleep-wake rhythms and anxiety symptoms. This cross-sectional study aimed at investigating the association between calcium homeostasis imbalance, anxiety, and quality of sleep in patients with GAD. A total of 211 patients were assessed using the Hamilton Rating Scale …
Development, Validation, and Measurement Invariance of the Body Image Bidimensional Assessment (Biba) in Italian and Spanish Children and Early Adolescent Samples
Body dissatisfaction (BD) is an important public health issue as it negatively influences the physical and psychosocial wellbeing of children/early adolescents. Available measures of BD for this population are scarce, have a significant bias, or only evaluate weight-related dissatisfaction. This study, through the exploratory factor analysis (EFA), aims to develop and validate the Italian (Study 1) and Spanish (Study 2) versions of a new tool, th…
The relationship of food addiction with binge eating disorder and obesity
Food addiction (FA) has been associated with binge eating disorder (BED) and obesity at varying levels of severity and treatment outcomes. Despite much debate and scientific interest in FA, the mechanisms that underlie its co-occurrence with both conditions are not yet well understood. In order to understand this relationship, this study explores FA in a clinical sample of individuals with BED and obesity using network analysis (NA). A total of 3…
Internalized-stigma and dissociative experiences in bipolar disorder
For the first time, our data suggests that self-stigma is associated to dissociative symptoms, reducing overall quality of life in BD. The early identification of at-risk patients with previous lifetime abuse and high perceived stigma could lead the way for an ever more precise tailoring of treatment management
Naturalistic and Uncontrolled Pilot Study on the Efficacy of Vortioxetine in Binge Eating Disorder With Comorbid Depression
Background: Binge eating disorder (BED) is clinically relevant by virtue of the global impairment, poor quality of life, and increased overall medical morbidity. The high comorbidity with psychiatric disorders, particularly depression, has received attention as a possible mediator of the poor outcome. Further, BED and depression share cognitive dysfunctions. This naturalistic and uncontrolled pilot study aimed at evaluating the efficacy of vortio…
Dissociative Symptoms in Bipolar Disorder
Background: Dissociative symptoms are under recognized and scarcely studied by clinicians and researchers in patients with bipolar disorder (BD). We examined the relationship between dissociative symptoms and the psychotic features in patients with BD and assessed clinical and socio-demographic characteristics more frequently associated with dissociative symptoms and treatment response. Methods: Participants were 100 adult outpatients with BD. Th…
