Patterns of caregivers' feeding practices and associated characteristics among preschool-age children in the United States
Stressful life events and transitions in problematic alcohol use involvement among US adults
OBJECTIVE: We investigated the impact of stressful life events (SLEs) for males and females on transitions in problematic alcohol involvement, both progression and recovery, over a 3-year interval. METHOD: Participants of both Wave 1 (2001-2002) and Wave 2 (2004-2005) of the National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions (NESARC) were stratified by sex (14,233 males and 19,550 females). Latent transition analysis estimated the im…
Social Stability Relates Social Conditions to the Syndemic of Sex, Drugs, and Violence
Genetic research participation in a young adult community sample
Environmental Influences Associated with Gambling in Young Adulthood
Differential relationships of family drinking with alcohol expectancy among urban school children
Individual tailored strategies that address family influences on alcohol expectancy may be needed in prevention programs targeting drinking behaviors in children
Early-onset drug use and risk for drug dependence problems
Smoking estimates from around the world
The World Mental Health Surveys estimates complement existing global tobacco monitoring efforts. The observed global diversity of associations with smoking and smoking cessation underscore reasons for implementation of the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control provisions and prompt local adaptation of prevention and control interventions
Unequal opportunity”
Study objectives: This study investigates whether subgroups of people living in disadvantaged neighbourhoods may be more likely to come into contact with drug dealers as compared with persons living in more advantaged areas, with due attention to male-female and race-ethnicity differences. Design: Standardised survey data collected using stratified, multistage area probability sampling. Setting: United States of America, 1998. Participants: Natio…
Establishing Independence in Low-Income Urban Areas
Although adolescents in poor urban areas often assume independent, adult-like roles, relatively little is known about the relationship between these roles and other adolescent behaviors. This research examines the association between independent roles occurring within different contexts (e.g. family, peer, work) and aggressive behavior among 516 low-income, urban middle school students. Overall, adolescent employment is related to increases in ag…
Substance use among nurses
OBJECTIVES: Valid data on factors that increase a health care worker's likelihood of substance use are integral in ensuring professional standards and quality health care for consumers. This study explored the association between nursing specialty and past-year substance use. METHODS: In an anonymous mailed survey, a balanced stratified sample of registered nurses (n = 4438) reported their use of marijuana, cocaine, and prescription-type drugs, a…
Behavioral Consequences of Job-Related Stress among Resident Physicians
This study examined the correlations among stressors, psychological strain, and behavioral reactions in a national sample of 1785 resident physicians, 27 to 33 years old. Consistent with previous studies of resident physicians, analysis showed that those experiencing high job-related stressors experienced high psychological strain in both their personal and professional lives. Stressors were also correlated with behavioral reactions. Hierarchical…
