Open Access•Reem Talhouk, Kyle Montague et al.•ARTICLE•Computer Supported Cooperative…•2022

With the Syrian crisis still ongoing, 91% of Syrian refugee families in Lebanon do not have adequate access to safe and sufficient food. There has been a drive for technological innovation in humanitarian food assistance. To further inform such innovation, we used an Experience-Centred Design approach to gain a holistic understanding of the experiences of refugee food insecurity and how refugees envision technologies can support them. Design enga…

  • Exploring the Role of Triangulation in the Production of Knowledge for Urban Health Policy

    Balsam Ahmad•ARTICLE•Forum for Development Studies•2014•References: 9

The aim of this paper is to illustrate through empirical data the role of within-method triangulation in the production of knowledge that can be used to inform urban policy related to informal settlements. The original aim of the study was to explore mechanisms by which living in informal neighbourhoods influenced women's health. I used 3 different methods for data collection. They included in-depth interviews with 10 key informants (urban planne…

  • Health system challenges of cardiovascular disease and diabetes in four Eastern Mediterranean countries

Open Access•Peter Phillimore, Shahaduz Zaman et al.•ARTICLE•Global Public Health•2013

This paper presents evidence from research into health system challenges of cardiovascular disease (CVD) and diabetes in four Eastern Mediterranean countries: the occupied Palestinian territory, Syria, Tunisia and Turkey. We address two questions. How has the health system in each country been conceptualised and organised to manage the provision of care for those with CVD or diabetes? • The influence of neighbourhood formality status and socio-economic position on self-rated health among adult men and women

Open Access•Balsam Ahmad, Vicky Ryan et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2013

Findings support evidence from high income countries that certain characteristic of neighbourhoods affect men and women in different ways. Further research from similar urban settings in developing countries is needed to understand the mechanisms by which informal neighbourhoods influence women's health

Shahaduz Zaman, F Fouad et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•2013

Background There is substantial evidence from multilevel studies in high income countries that neighbourhood socioeconomic status (SES) influences health independent of individual SES characteristics. In comparison, few qualitative studies have explored lay knowledge of neighbourhood influence on health. We explored and compared views on how neighbourhoods influenced health in married women, from different socioeconomic positions and living in ne…

  • Self-rated health and its determinants among adults in Syria

Open Access•Taghrid Asfar, Balsam Ahmad et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2007

Women were more likely than men to describe their health as poor. The link with age and pre-existing chronic conditions seems universal and likely reflects natural aging process. Determinants of SRH differed between men and women, possibly highlighting underlying cultural norms and gender roles in the society. Understanding the local context of SRH and its determinants within the prevailing culture will be important to tailor intervention program…

  • Integrating health into impact assessment

Balsam Ahmad, Balsam S Ahmad•ARTICLE•Impact Assessment and Project…•2004

O OTHER FIELD OF IMPACT assessment has been so popular in recent years as health impact assessment (HIA). The last five years, in particular, have seen a surge in published papers, reviews, guidelines and websites related to HIA. Such increasing popularity makes one ask: Has HIA in its development come closer to environmental impact assessment (EIA)? What challenges face the integration of EIA and HIA? What are the opportunities for such integrat…
