Children’s ecological knowledge: Drawings as a tool for ethnoecologists (Gabon, Madagascar)

Indirect evidence for the genetic determination of short stature in African Pygmies
Central African Pygmy populations are known to be the shortest human populations worldwide. Many evolutionary hypotheses have been proposed to explain this short stature: adaptation to food limitations, climate, forest density, or high mortality rates. However, such hypotheses are difficult to test given the lack of long‐term surveys and demographic data. Whether the short stature observed nowadays in African Pygmy populations as compared to thei…
Stress psychosocial de l'enfant et excrétion urinaire de cortisol: Impact Du Type De Structure Familiale Et De l'Expérience De Migration
The relationship between migration, family structure and stress level was investigated in an anthropological study carried out in Marseilles on 60 children of Senegalese origin, 5 to 15 years old. The biological stress level was assessed through the 24h cortisol level in urine samples, standardized according to sex and age. These children lived either in nuclear families or in family structures of another type. Some children had recently experien…
The stress levels of 40 Senegalese migrant children were studied by measuring the level of cortisol, adrenalin, noradrenalin, and dopamine in their 24-hour urinary excretion. The choice and the adaptation of methods necessary for carrying out a study in the family environment rather than under hospital conditions are specified. Urinary cortisol is taken as a good indicator of a psychosocial stress over a long period. The measurement of stress hor…
A retrospective fertility survey has been conducted in 325 women from 13 villages of the Ntem valley (southern Cameroon) and 62 teenagers from Ma’an secondary school, over 15 years old. The important increase of fertility related to the disappearing of the primary sterility has been accompanied with women’s changing attitudes, aspirations and sexual behaviours in a context of mobility related to higher school levels. Theses phenomenons are likely…
Growth in height and weight is considered as indicators of nutritional status; they respond to both genetic and environmental factors such as nutritional value of the diet, exposition to infectious and parasitic diseases, sociocultural and psychoaffective context. This study concerns the relationship between splenomegaly as an indicator of a chronic context of parasitic load and the growth in height or weight of preschool children from rainforest…

Growth retardation in weight and catch-up growth following infection by measles and whooping cough among babies of rural Zaire (Lake Tumba)
This study has shown that measles and whooping cough affect growth in weight among babies of rural Zaire (Lake Tumba). The average loss in weight due to measles, is more than twice the amount due to whooping cough. However, the time needed to regain the original growth channel after infection by measles, is about half the time needed to fully catch up after whooping cough. The amount of weight loss is proportional to the child's weight at the ons…

Seasonal variation in the growth rate of weight in African babies, aged 0 to 4 years
Seasonal variation in growth rate of weight of 4,030 Ntomba babies (Lake Tumba, Zaire), aged 0 to 4 years was analysed in relation to sex, age and caste differences. The data were collected between mid‐August, 1977, and May, 1980, during a longitudinal survey and consisted of 34,470 measurements of body weight. The actual analysis is based on mean standardized weight increments, calculated over three monthly intervals. The growth rate in weight o…
Seasonal hunger as experienced by the Oto and the Twa women of a Ntomba village in the equatorial forest (lake Tumba, Zaïre)
An anthropometric survey in a Ntomba village showed how selected physiological parameters of adult women in different physiological states were affected by the rainy season. One hundred and twenty‐seven Oto, and 50 Twa women were measured at the end of the major dry and the major rainy seasons. The 20–39 age groups and the nursing women seemed to be most affected, with a 1.4 kg weight loss being reported among the Oto. Pregnant women did not lose…
Attitude of Ntomba society towards the primiparous woman and its biological effects
In the Ntomba of Zaire, observation on weaning patterns shows that the young primipara receives special attention in terms of nutrition and expected activities. Anthropometric examination shows that there is a pronounced effect on physique, the resulting accumulation of fat providing a buffer against seasonal variation in food availability, and allowing her to meet the high energy cost of nursing. The biological effects of these cultural practice…
Body composition as influenced by cultural patterns in primiparous women in an African forest population
Seasonal hunger, as experienced by the Oto and the Twa of a Ntomba village in the equatorial forest (lake Tumba, Zaire)
An anthropometric study in a Ntomba village showed how the socioeconomic categories of adult men were differently affected by seasonal weight loss. The major rainy season is experienced as a hungry season mainly because of the scarcity of animal foodstuff. During this time, 68 percent of the Oto and 75 percent of the Twa pygmoids living in the same village lost weight (0.6 kg to 2.2 kg depending on age subgroup). Among the Oto, neither the fisher…
