The impact of rising temperatures on social conflict in China
We examine the causal effect of temperature on social conflict in China, with a specific focus on labor unrest including strikes and worker protests—which constitutes a frequently overlooked form of social conflict. Using city-daily weather data matched with social conflicts (2014–2020), we employ a high-dimensional fixed effects to account for time-invariant city characteristics and common temporal shocks, thereby isolating plausibly exogenous t…
Growth preference and air pollution in China
We estimate the causal effects of local officials’ growth preferences on air pollution. Leveraging the unprecedented and uneven economic shocks caused by COVID-19, which resulted in substantial changes in gross domestic product growth rankings, we analyse variations in growth preferences. Our findings reveal that a 10-unit change in growth rankings leads to significant increases in Air Quality Index and ambient pollutant concentrations. Key predi…

Towards a low-carbon economy
As a financial instrument and a crucial component of the environmental governance system, the comprehensive impacts of green credit on both the economy and the environment remain unclear. This study examines Chinese provincial data from 2001 to 2018 and employs multiple models to assess the dynamic effects of green credit on carbon productivity. The findings indicate a significant positive influence of green credit on carbon productivity within l…
Trick or treat? Quasi-experimental evidence from electricity spot market policy in China
The electricity system faces load-matching pressure due to imbalances during peak times or extreme weather, making it costly to phase out coal-fired electricity and reduce carbon emissions. The electricity spot market pilot (ESMP) policy provides reserve capacities for grids, but its effectiveness on green economic development is still unknown. Therefore, using panel data from 286 cities in China from 2006 to 2019, this study analyzes the impact …

Impact of lateral melting on Arctic sea ice simulation in a coupled climate model
Lateral melting is an important process driving the sea ice decay, yet it is not well represented in many Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 (CMIP6) models. This study explores the impact of lateral melting on Arctic sea ice simulation by implementing lateral melting and floe size parameterization schemes in the medium resolution version of the Beijing Climate Center Climate System Model. Results from a series of CMIP6 historical-type …

The psychological typhoon eye effect in responses to terrorism
Terrorist attacks can occur anywhere. As the threat of terrorism develops, the China-Eurasia Expo held in Ürümqi, China is attracting fewer potential visitors. A nationwide survey of 2034 residents from 31 provinces and municipalities in China was conducted to examine the relation between the distance to respondents’ city of residence from Ürümqi and their levels of concern for safety and security concerning the Expo. The two were found to be pos…

Skillful seasonal prediction of Yangtze river valley summer rainfall
China suffers from frequent summer floods and droughts, but seasonal forecast skill of corresponding summer rainfall remains a key challenge. In this study, we demonstrate useful levels of prediction skill over the Yangtze river valley for summer rainfall and river flows using a new high resolution forecast system. Further analysis of the sources of predictability suggests that the predictability of Yangtze river valley summer rainfall correspond…
