  • Policy SEA

Anna Axelsson, David Annandale et al.•ARTICLE•Impact Assessment and Project…•2012

This professional practice report reflects upon lessons learned from piloting and evaluating an innovative approach to policy strategic environmental assessment (SEA) in developing countries. The primary analytical focuses of the approach are institutions and governance characteristics, plus it places strong emphasis on learning. The piloting provides valuable insights about the conduct of SEA at the policy level and in socio-political where ther…

  • Applying sustainability assessment models

Jenny Pope, Angus Morrison-Saunders et al.•ARTICLE•Impact Assessment and Project…•2005

Three sustainability assessment models are applied to a major Australian resource proposal — the Gorgon gas development. ‘Environmental impact assessment (EIA)-driven integrated assessment’ resulted in significant environmental resources being ‘traded’ for socio-economic benefits. ‘Objectives-led integrated assessment’ seeks to maximise social, economic and environmental objectives set by decision-makers. • Developing and evaluating environmental impact assessment systems for small developing countries

    David Annandale•ARTICLE•Impact Assessment and Project…•2001

This paper categorizes and reviews different approaches to environmental impact assessment (EIA) system evaluation. It then describes the application of Wood's (1995) ‘ideal’ EIA system evaluation criteria to the Republic of Maldives. Few of the criteria are actually met. Is the Maldivian EIA system therefore fundamentally flawed or deficient? Field observations suggest that this is not so and, while many improvements can be made, the system is q…

  • Practitioner perspectives on what influences EIA quality

Angus Morrison-Saunders, David Annandale et al.•ARTICLE•Impact Assessment and Project…•2001

Two surveys were conducted recently of environmental impact assessment (EIA) practitioners in Western Australia. The first investigated the pressure on proponents to produce good quality environmental impact statements (EIS) and the second sought to understand what factors influence the level and quality of science during EIA. Available time and financial resources were found to be important determinants in both surveys. The two main influencing …
