Improving the design and management of temporary events in public spaces by applying urban design criteria
Urban public spaces such as parks, plazas, and waterfronts play a significant role in contributing to the character, economy and success of cities. Planned events such as festivals and markets have been increasingly staged in urban public spaces. These activities not only make urban public spaces lively and vibrant, they also have critical positive impacts on their venues. They help generate revenue, create a sense of place, and contribute to bui…
Localising Global Climate Agendas: Challenges and Opportunities in Informal Settlements
The effectiveness of global climate agendas, such as the Paris Agreement and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), depends on how they are translated into action on the ground. Yet little is known about how these frameworks reach informal settlements in the global South, where climate risks are most acute, and state presence is uneven. Drawing on multi-sited fieldwork in informal settlements in Ghana, the Philippines and the Dominican Republi…
Enabling Citizen Engagement via Geolocated AR Interaction with a Digital Twin City
This study reports on the devising and testing of the implementation and effectiveness of geolocated augmented reality (AR) as a potential means to convey urban information and elicit citizen interaction with the ability to interface with a digital twin city (DTC) environment. We have taken an open platform approach. The prospective approach is specifically chosen to test a set of technologies that could inform and actively engage citizens in mat…

Examining a Primary Education Approach Using Digital Storytelling: Chinese Industrial Heritage as a Vehicle to Support Learning
Digital storytelling has emerged as an innovative approach that integrates technology with education, demonstrating growing research and practical value in cultural heritage preservation. This study focuses on China’s industrial heritage and conducts empirical research with primary school students (Years 1–6) to examine how digital storytelling enhances engagement in industrial heritage education in particular, but also how industrial heritage re…
Incorporating Immersive Technologies to Improve the Design and Management of Temporary Urban Events in Public Spaces
Planned events in urban public spaces often face design challenges, and consequent poor performance, due to limited consideration of spatial criteria during the planning process. Our previous work revealed that event designers tend to have no urban design, or similar, training. Consequently, this paper reports on a Virtual Reality (VR)/Mixed Reality (MR) tool developed as a ‘proof of concept’ to support event designers in evaluating and modifying…
Only Spot a Few Blacks the Higher I Go: Occupational Segregation and the Covid-19 Pandemic
This paper examines whether there exists a link between occupational segregation by race and labor market outcomes during the COVID-19 pandemic. We estimate the extent to which workers who were employed in occupations with higher concentrations of Black workers were more likely to indicate a change in employer, a change in hours employed, or a change in earnings during the pandemic. The results show that Black workers employed in occupations with…
Development of a novel performance evaluation framework for implementing regenerative practices in construction
While sustainable construction practices effectively reduce environmental impact, their exclusive focus on environmental, economic, and social goals limits their ability to actively foster positive transformation and ecosystem restoration. Addressing the growing challenges in the built environment necessitates a shift to regenerative practices within the construction industry. Unlike sustainability, regenerative practices go beyond the concept of…
A Smart Heritage System to Re-Generate New Zealand’s 19th Century Timber Churches
This article describes a Smart Heritage computational system that automatically produces a wide range of design proposals for new timber Gothic churches based on an intelligent interpretation of an architectural database of historic churches. The system enlists the software ‘Houdini’ and a digitally archived dataset of 19th Century timber Gothic churches. The cases presented here focus primarily on timber churches built in Wellington, New Zealand…
Black school, white school: Racism and educational (mis)leadership
Brooks’ (2012) book, Black school, white school: racism and educational (mis)leadership opens with pointing out that racism is still a salient obstacle in American society. In the book, we see Broo
