  • The journey of gestational surrogacy

Ann Fisher, Ann M Fisher•ARTICLE•International Journal of Children…•2013

This article discusses the intersection of women’s experiences with the assisted reproductive technological practice of gestational surrogacy and spirituality and religion. During the interviews of eight gestational surrogates themes of spirituality-, religion- and faith-based language emerged as these women shared their narratives of assisted reproductive technologies in this Canadian study. Professionals supporting women before, during and afte…

  • A pilot test of a new stated preference valuation method

    Open Access•Richard C Ready, Richard Ready et al.•ARTICLE•Ecological Economics•2006

  • In what sense does the public need to understand global climate change

    Open Access•Richard J Bord, Robert E O'Connor et al.•ARTICLE•Public Understanding of Science•2000

In a survey of 1,218 Americans, the key determinant of behavioral intentions to address global warming is a correct understanding of the causes of global warming. Knowing what causes climate change, and what does not, is the most powerful predictor of both stated intentions to take voluntary actions and to vote on hypothetical referenda to enact new government policies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Identifying bogus causes (e.g., insecticid…

  • Risk Perceptions, General Environmental Beliefs, and Willingness to Address Climate Change

    Open Access•Robert E O'Connor, Robert E O’connor et al.•ARTICLE•Risk Analysis•1999

The research reported here examines the relationship between risk perceptions and willingness to address climate change. The data are a national sample of 1225 mail surveys that include measures of risk perceptions and knowledge tied to climate change, support for voluntary and government actions to address the problem, general environmental beliefs, and demographic variables. Risk perceptions matter in predicting behavioral intentions. Risk perc…

  • How information about likely accomplishments affects willingness to sacrifice to reduce global warming

    Robert E O'Connor, Robert E O’connor et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Risk Research•1998•Cited by: 2•References: 4

Does information on what a proposed tax or regulation is likely to accomplish affect willingness to sacrifice? The economists' perspective is that having information about what a sacrifice is 'buying' is likely to influence choices. A different perspective is that vote choices in referenda are more of a symbolic exercise, with voters adopting a heuristic toward an issue domain and the heuristic guiding the vote. This research examines the impact …

  • Can Public Information Programs Affect Risk Perceptions

V Kerry Smith, William H Desvousges et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Policy Analysis and…•1990•Cited by: 6

This article provides the first controlled evaluation of how different information materials explaining the risks from radon influenced people's perceptions of these risks. Using a panel study, it was possible to observe how stated risk perceptions responded to information about indoor radon concentrations and brochures explaining the radon readings. The findings indicate that risk communication policies can be effective in modifying risk percept…

  • The Value of Reducing Risks of Death

Ann Fisher, Lauraine G Chestnut et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Policy Analysis and…•1989•Cited by: 14•References: 3

Government agencies face difficult resource-allocation decisions when confronted with projects that will reduce risks of fatality. Evidence from individual behavior helps determine society's values for reducing risks. The most credible evidence is based on individuals' willingness to pay (or willingness to accept compensation) for small changes in risks. Studies of consumer behavior are limited, but more evidence is available relating wages to jo…
