  • A flexible framework for species-based regional cumulative effects assessments to support offshore wind energy planning and management

    Open Access•Megan C Ferguson, Kathryn A Williams et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Impact Assessment…•2025•Cited by: 2•References: 32

Offshore wind energy development (OWED) is pivotal for renewable energy transition and climate resiliency. However, OWED activities may negatively affect wildlife, contributing to cumulative effects (CE) from human activities and natural processes. Cumulative effects assessments (CEAs) are vital for informed planning and management of OWED activities during regional assessment, site selection, and site evaluation phases. To reduce impacts on wild…

  • Abundance of the Eastern Chukchi Sea Stock of Beluga Whales, 2012 – 17

    Open Access•Geof H Givens, Megan C Ferguson et al.•ARTICLE•ARCTIC•2020

Aerial line transect surveys were conducted during 19 July – 20 August in each of the years 2012 – 17, with onshore – offshore transects covering a study area of approximately 110 000 km2, from 140 ̊ W to 157 ̊ W longitude and from shore to 72 ̊ N latitude. These data were used to estimate abundance of the eastern Chukchi Sea (ECS) stock of beluga whales. The data were stratified based on bathymetry to reflect strong large-scale gradients in belu…

  • Bowhead and Beluga Whale Distributions, Sighting Rates, and Habitat Associations in the Western Beaufort Sea in Summer and Fall 2009–16, with Comparison to 1982–91

    Open Access•Janet T Clarke, Megan C Ferguson et al.•ARTICLE•ARCTIC•2018

We analyzed data from line-transect aerial surveys for marine mammals conducted in the western Beaufort Sea (shore to 72 ̊ N, 140 ̊–157 ̊ W) from July to October of 2009–16 to investigate the distribution, behaviors, sighting rates, and habitat use preferences of bowhead and beluga whales. The habitat use data allowed for direct comparison with data collected in the same area from 1982 to 1991. Both species are ice-adapted, migrating through lead…

  • Bowhead and Gray Whale Distributions, Sighting Rates, and Habitat Associations in the Eastern Chukchi Sea, Summer and Fall 2009–15, with a Retrospective Comparison to 1982–91

    Open Access•Janet T Clarke, Amy S Kennedy et al.•ARTICLE•ARCTIC•2016

We analyzed data from line-transect aerial surveys for marine mammals conducted in the eastern Chukchi Sea (67 ̊–72 ̊ N, 157 ̊–169 ̊ W) in July to October of 2009–15 to investigate bowhead and gray whale distributions, behaviors, sighting rates, and habitat selection preferences, the last of which allowed direct comparison with results from data collected in this area in 1982–91. Bowhead whales use the eastern Chukchi Sea primarily for migrating …
