  • From the Amazon to the world

Open Access•Juliana Ardenghi, Rui M Sá et al.•ARTICLE•Anthropocene•2026

The internationalization of food systems in the context of the Anthropocene has intensified socio-environmental pressures on tropical products. This study analyzes the environmental and social impacts of the global expansion of açaí (Euterpe oleracea), a palm native to the Amazon that has evolved from a traditional staple of Indigenous and riverine communities into a globally traded “superfood,” through a narrative review. The results indicate th…

  • Grazing or confining — Decoding Beef's environmental footprint

    Open Access•Tiago G Morais, Manuel P dos Santos et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Impact Assessment…•2025•Cited by: 1•References: 46

Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions of beef production are extremely variable depending on the livestock production system (LPS) used, with lack of clarity on the influencing factors. Here, we assess those factors using a mass balance model with regional case study data for Portugal. We show that the whole-system GHG emissions range for beef production from steers in beef herds is 15–124 kg CO 2 e per 100 g protein depending on LPS (confined, pasture-…

  • Agroecological measures and circular economy strategies to ensure sufficient nitrogen for sustainable farming

  • Critical Appraisal of Life Cycle Impact Assessment Databases for Agri‐food Materials

    Open Access•Ricardo F M Teixeira•ARTICLE•Journal of Industrial Ecology•2015

Simplified life cycle assessment (LCA) is an attempt to expedite standard LCA methodology. One common simplification is to use secondary databases comprised of results, instead of inventories, from previous LCA studies to avoid data collection and speed up calculations. This article contains an assessment of the depth and variance in such databases, using descriptive analyses and clustering of 2,276 published global warming potential weighted emi…
